"Obama weathers Wright storm"

Whether you're a Barack Obama fan or you just want a Democrat to win the White House this November, here's some good news:

A second national poll released today finds that Democrat Barack Obama has survived the furor over his former pastor's incendiary remarks, in no small part because of the speech he gave in response.

Earlier today, Mark posted similar results from a new NBC-Wall Street Journal poll. The latest, from the Pew Research Center, is headlined "Obama Weathers the Wright Storm, Clinton Faces Credibility Problem." The bottom line for the Democratic nomination race: Obama 49%-Clinton 39%, almost identical to a month ago. Click here to see more of Pew's findings and details of the poll.

The saying "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" comes to mind.  Go Obama!

State of the race (South County - 3/27/2008 10:05:33 PM)
Maybe people are realizing that Obama has it in him to take a punch and right himself and/or that HRC has no realistic path to the nomination.  The recent articles about how the race isn't as close as it is being covered in the media may be sinking in as well.  Recent articles quoted members of HRC's own staff that pegged her chance of winning the nomination at only about 10%, at best.  After all, she can't surpass him in pledged delegtes without running the table with ~65% of the vote in each contest.  Failing that, her efforts to upend democracy by winning over enough superdelegates would likely destroy the Democratic party for many years by turning off a huge chunk of a new generation of young people who Barack brought into the fray.  Plus, HRC's increasingly negative tone is driving her negatives up and making her look silly.  The kitchen sink strategy may have worked once, but I get the feeling many folks are tired of it.  If these attacks keep up, McCain should stand to benefit, but his poll numbers should be knocked down some because of Iraq's ongoing political ineptness causing a bit of an uptick in violence there.

Sen. Dodd concurs (Chris Guy - 3/27/2008 10:21:16 PM)
"I think it's very difficult to imagine how anyone can believe that Barack Obama can't be the nominee of the party. I think that's a foregone conclusion, in my view, at this juncture given where things are."

Make It Stop 2008 (TheGreenMiles - 3/27/2008 10:24:07 PM)
The Green Miles doesn't ordinarily watch Larry King and Anderson Cooper ... er, AC360 (insert whooshing sound). But I'm at The Green Mom's so she's controlling the remote. And it's all Wright all the time. Jessica Yellin just repeated stuff Newsday reported without confirming it, basically saying, "If Newsday said it, we hope it's true."

I'm stunned (humanfont - 3/27/2008 11:05:27 PM)
I'm absolutly stunned by the Obama phenomena.  The man is untouchable.  I mean the Wright thing was the vast rightwing conspiracy and the Clintons going after him(as witnessed by Scaiffe and Hillary getting together).  This guy is Elliot Ness.   I was writing his political obit in my diary the other day, and today he's still standing.

Hope plus Straight Talk An Unbeatable Combination (jlmccreery - 3/27/2008 11:14:18 PM)
People all over the country have rallied to Obama's message of hope and national unity. But, asked the pundits, is there substance behind the charisma? Oh yes there is. Then, asked the pundits, is he tough enough? The Wright thing demonstrates yes, again. Toughness and resilience, plenty of that. But the real message of the Wright kafluffle is that if you speak straight to people, addressing their concerns in a frank caring manner, the American people have a way of trusting what you say.

Obama, the Democratic Reagan? (Rebecca - 3/28/2008 9:08:05 AM)
Obama seems to have the luck of the Irish, or at least has that ability Ronald Reagan had to deflect criticism. That was disturbing in Reagan since I believe many of his policies were harmful to people, but I am thankful for it in Obama.

Hey I'll Take Teflon in a Democrat! (AnonymousIsAWoman - 3/28/2008 11:45:19 AM)
Been thinking the same thing as I've watched this unfold.  The comparison to Reagan, as far as charisma goes and the ability to recover from attacks, is apt.  But let's not take the comparison too far :)

Definitely (Rebecca - 3/28/2008 12:15:11 PM)
I think he has the good characteristics of Reagan. I did like the fact that Reagan stood up the to Soviet Union. I think Obama will stand up to some of these wishy-washy dictatorhips like Pakistan too.
