White House Computers Destroyed, Email System "Primitive"

A new twist in the White House email scandal (Bush Administration Scandal Reference #389261). Turns out the White House not only failed to archive emails, they destroyed the hard drives:

WASHINGTON - Older White House computer hard drives have been destroyed, the White House disclosed to a federal court Friday in a controversy over millions of possibly missing e-mails from 2003 to 2005. [...]

At a House committee hearing last month, a computer expert who previously worked at the White House called the e-mail system "primitive" and said it was set up in a way that created a high risk that data would be lost from White House servers where it was being archived.

Under pressure to provide details about its computer system, the White House told the congressional committee that it never completed work that began in 2003 on a planned records management and e-mail archiving system. The White House canceled the project in late 2006 and says it is still working on a new version.

The media has reported this story as "White House does a terrible job of archiving emails," but since we don't have to be objective, let's turn this around on the White House. Imagine the White House's goal was to not archive emails. From that perspective, could they have done any better a job? Couldn't the headline just as easily be "White House does a great job of destroying emails"?

An email system (Terry85 - 3/22/2008 12:29:13 PM)
that's "primitive?"  What exactly is a "primitive" email system?  What are they using AOL 1.0 or something....????

So instead of 18 minutes (Teddy - 3/22/2008 12:31:58 PM)
of "accidentally" wiped tape (good job, Rosemary) we now have 7 years of artfully accidental destruction of entire hard drives. How convenient.

Can some musician please write, record, and promote a clever song about these poor lost years, day after day, message after message, gone forever?

You Nailed It! (oldsoldier - 3/22/2008 8:49:57 PM)
There's been a lot of talk about what would have happened if Nixon had destroyed all the tapes.  Cheney is not a dummy, hard drives to the crusher ASAP.

This is crazy (dominionsboy - 3/22/2008 12:53:00 PM)
3 years to design a new email storage system.   How can anyone take them seriously?  Honestly, i'm offended.

Honesty (snolan - 3/22/2008 3:24:23 PM)
Is anyone old enough to remember a single honest statement given by GW Bush or his official administration spokespeople?

It's not about one or two stretched truths... I can't remember a single truth from the lying criminals.

Not once (Teddy - 3/22/2008 6:24:59 PM)
are we given the truth--- not even when the truth would serve as well.  The little liar is batting one thousand.

"Primitive" ??? (hereinva - 3/22/2008 5:13:01 PM)

Guess the "internets" is just too much for the WH to handle.

Does anyone else remember ... (TheGreenMiles - 3/22/2008 6:42:34 PM)
