Sen. Webb on the 2009 Budget

I love how only two Republicans -- Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine -- voted for the Senate budget resolution.  I guess the other Republicans would rather continue policies that favor the super-wealthy at the expense of the other 99% of Americans. They'd also rather continue running up huge budget deficits and contributing to the country's growing economic crisis by so doing. Finally, they'd apparently rather keep underinvesting in America, while bridges collapse and other infrastructure crumbles. Pathetic.

Statement of Senator Webb on the Approved FY09 Senate Budget

Washington, D.C.  - Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) today issued the following statement upon the approval of the fiscal year 2009 Senate budget:

"The Senate today passed a responsible budget, aimed at stimulating the economy by making sound investments in the American workforce and infrastructure. The budget reflects the priorities of a majority of Americans. I view this as a necessary correction to the President's budget proposal which sought to flat-line domestic programs at a time when we most need to invigorate our nation's economy.

"The budget passed today is fiscally disciplined.  It restores a balanced budget by 2012.

"This budget invests in our people, with $340 billion in tax cuts for America's working families. Instead of providing and extending tax breaks to the wealthiest in our country, this budget sends extra dollars back to those who need them the most. These tax cuts will provide relief to married couples, parents, the members of our armed services, and more than 72 million homeowners through a new property tax deduction.

"The Senate also acknowledged today that investment in our nation's highways, bridges, and water systems is one of the strongest tonics for a stagnant economy. This budget allocates billions of dollars for infrastructure projects which will create hundreds of thousands of high-paying, stable jobs that can't be sent overseas.

"The budget also includes an amendment I offered, reserving federal funds for veterans' programs that focus on education and training. This reserve fund is an important first step toward funding a comprehensive '21st Century' GI Bill for the newest generation of veterans. With a bipartisan majority of 51 cosponsors on my Post-9/11 GI Bill, I am hopeful we will see the bill enacted this year."

And yet, women's organizations continue to support them (hcc in va - 3/14/2008 2:21:36 PM)
Markos and Jerome used this as an example, in Crashing the Gates, of how one issue organizations, such as NOW, etc., can act even against their own interests.  They support WOMEN like the two above who vote against issues that they favor...such as approving Supreme Court justices who oppose Roe vs. Wade.  Another example is how such organizations view Obama supporters as traitors to the cause.  Seems to me, they have outlived their usefulness when they can't distinguish between self interest and interest of their constituency.

Webb on NPR's Weekend Edition tomorrow (Shenandoah Democrat - 3/14/2008 5:44:06 PM)
I just got this:
On Saturday morning, Senator Webb will join host Scott Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition to discuss the five year anniversary of the war in Iraq. The Senator was an early warning voice against the administration's decision to invade Iraq, and he has repeatedly called for a robust diplomatic strategy in order to reduce the United States' military presence in the region.
Go Senator Webb!!
