Congratulations to the George Mason University Patriots for their 68-59 victory over William & Mary in the finals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.  That clinches an NCAA tournament berth for GMU. Go Patriots!

Maybe another "Cinderella" trip to the dance? (proudvadem - 3/10/2008 10:35:45 PM)

Maybe Mason will have another showing @ the Final Four?!?!
I'd love to see that..
Meanwhile, I can only hope that next season is better for my Monarchs @ ODU...

I beg to differ. (bpkybe - 3/10/2008 11:12:27 PM)
I mean, congrats to GMU and all, but I had another horse in that race...

A very exciting game ... (Catzmaw - 3/10/2008 11:29:39 PM)
I was impressed by the William and Mary team, especially the big Lithuanian kid.   GMU just did a good job of adjusting and getting around a highly motivated opponent.  They did this GMU graduate proud.  Go Patriots!

How is this related to politics? (Dennis Coyle - 3/11/2008 12:08:01 AM)
I'm just saying... I visit RK for the political insight. If you're going to cover sports, then be fair and also cover theater. Covering one but not the other ignores a large core of the Dem vote.

What does it (Catzmaw - 3/11/2008 12:52:39 AM)
take to congratulate a sports team for winning, about 33 words?  You can cover the beginning, the middle, and the end of a sports contest in a pretty brief statement.  How are we supposed "cover" theater?  "Congrats on the Washington Metropolitan Opera for a particularly bloody final act in 'Tosca'"?  How about "Let's hear it for an almost contagious invitation to hopelessness and suicide in the Warner Theater's 'Death of a Salesman'"?  I'm sorry, theater reviews just don't have the immediacy, zip, clarity, or finality found in congratulations to a successful sports team.

"Let's hear it for an almost contagious invitation to hopelessness and suicide."

Well worth a 4.00 for that.

It got me thinking about how political blogging is actually an interesting combination of sports reporting and theater coverage.  You have some who focus on the the "plays," the scores, and the stats, and others who focus on the underlying and overarching theatrical props, memes, and themes.  And, now that you mention it, many of us who have stuck with the progressive fight against the status quo have sometimes seen progressive politics as "an almost contagious invitation to hopelessness and suicide."

You're welcome to be the RK (Lowell - 3/11/2008 5:49:26 AM)
theater critic. :)

By the way... (Lowell - 3/11/2008 5:51:35 AM)
...most Virginia political blogs cover big sports events. I wouldn't be surprised, for instance, if NLS has an NCAA tournament pool this year.  I am looking forward to it as a nice break from all-politics, all-the-time.

Commonwealth Conservative (Lowell - 3/11/2008 8:38:40 AM)
for instance always talked about sports, mainly because the blog's author, Chad Dotson, liked sports.  And you know what, I don't think I ever saw anyone complain that he took a break from politics now and again.  In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain here on RK when we've talked sports, but there's always a first for everything I guess!

Way to go GMU (GMUDem - 3/11/2008 1:35:04 AM)
I'm a current student, I was at the game, and props to RK for covering it!

Sigh (code - 3/11/2008 10:02:00 AM)
Yet another year W&M will not be in the tournament. 315 years without a tournament slot. When will it end?

Those early years especially... (BrianDStraw - 3/11/2008 12:12:07 PM)
I mean back in the day when William and Mary and Harvard were the only two schools in the country. Not getting a bid back then is an outrage!

Think of it this way.... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 3/11/2008 12:18:36 PM)
... at least they can claim they haven't lost a game in the NCAA tournament in over 300 years :):)

As a GMU Student.... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 3/11/2008 12:17:37 PM)
... I definitely love the fact that we're going back to the dance. That being said, I don't see us making another run to the Final Four like we did a couple of years ago.

I am laughing so hard I am crying... (lgb30856 - 3/11/2008 1:10:41 PM)

I live just down the road from W&M, they played a great game. you should be proud.

Go Tribe! (legacyofmarshall - 3/11/2008 5:30:36 PM)
We are proud, WM is not a sports school, and that we got such a team so far is a cool accomplishment.

I've always said that IF W&M wanted a good team, which it really doesn't need, it should be basketball.  We're in good company with VCU and GMU in the division, the CAA should/could become a national deal someday.
