A Crazy Idea to Lower Your Fuel Costs: Use Less Fuel

But instead, Maryland is doing this:
A rising concern of Maryland lawmakers is why prices can vary so greatly from one gas station to another that are in close proximity.

[WRC-TV] reported that in some cases, gas stations that are only a few blocks to a few miles away from each other can show a difference in price ranging from 10 cents to 50 cents per gallon. [...]

Maryland lawmakers are considering a bill that would create a task force that would investigate the enforcement of zone pricing.
The report continued, "Experts said oil companies charge different prices based on the location of a gas station. That difference in price is then passed onto the consumer." That's crazy talk! Next thing you're going to tell me a beer is more expensive in DC than it is in Charlottesville.

Oil prices aren't going down anytime soon. That means we can either take serious action to dramatically cut our fuel use through existing efficiency technologies like plug-in hybrids ... or we can keep commissioning studies to examine why oil companies are squeezing us for every drop they can.

As someone who agrees with your goal but usually disagrees with your tone/approach I just had to say Agree 110%

But DC has the Brickskeller! (Jack Landers - 3/10/2008 10:06:47 AM)
Yeah, but you guys also have the Brickskeller.  What I wouldn't give to have a Brickskeller open up here in Charlottesville...

Incidentally, do you know if anyone has done the math to figure out what our fuel consumption would be like nationally if we'd tightened up CAFE standards for trucks and SUVs 10 years ago? Considering the percentage of used 10 year old and newer vehicles on the road at this point, would it have been enough savings to affect the price of gasoline at the pump in a meaningful way?

That would be a handy bit of info to be armed with in the promotion of higher CAFE standards. Cheaper gas.

Wow, MD lawmakers are dense! (tx2vadem - 3/10/2008 6:53:29 PM)
Marketers of gasoline have always been charging different prices based on the location of the station.  And this same old story comes up every time prices go up.  Time to go another round and investigate price gauging only to uncover nothing.  There are a lot of reasons why prices vary.  Maryland residents should be upset that their government is wasting this money.
