Bobby Scott Blasts Jo Ann Davis Resolution

If you haven't seen this, please see the statement below by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA 3rd CD) regarding House Res. 579, a non-binding measure pushed by Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-VA 1st CD), "[e]xpressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected."  Everyone feel safe now to celebrate Christmas?  Thank God for Jo Ann Davis, for her resolution, and for single-handedly saving Santa Claus for future generations!  Heh.  Anyway, here's Rep. Scott's statement, which makes it clear that it's people like Jo Ann Davis and her fellow "conservatives" who are the Grinches stealing the true spirit of Christmas.

Madam Speaker, this resolution purports to protect the symbols of Christmas, but what really needs to be protected are not the symbols of Christmas, but rather the spirit of Christmas. The spirit of Christmas demands generosity and goodwill towards others. Instead of legislation that respects the spirit of Christmas, Congress in just these past few weeks has passed a budget that includes mean-spirited attacks on the least of us. For those who are hungry, we are cutting food stamps. For those who are sick, we are cutting Medicaid. For those who are in prison, we are imposing senseless mandatory minimums. For others we are ignoring increases in heating costs and cutting student loans. At the same time we are cutting those programs to help the least of us, we are cutting taxes for the wealthiest in society. Madam Speaker, we ought to express our passion for Christmas through deeds, not words; and we should not be distracted from our responsibility to uphold the spirit of Christmas as we consider the effects our actions on the Federal budget will have on the least of us during this holiday season. For these reasons I oppose this resolution.

Thank you, Bobby Scott.  Now, our job is to  remove Jo Ann Davis from Congress before she decides to "protect" us again.  What next, laws to protect the Easter Bunny?  How about the Energizer Bunny or Bugs Bunny, while we're at it?  Where does this wackiness end?

Luckily, we've got a great candidate running against Jo Ann Davis this year, a guy named Shawn O'Donnell.  I urge everyone in the 1st CD of Virginia to support Shawn, so he can protect us from the REAL threats to our liberty and prosperity posed by people like Jo Ann Davis.
