Jim Webb Endorses Leslie Byrne for Congress

Tim Craig has the scoop:

Sen. James Webb said today he is endorsing Leslie L. Byrne in the race for the Democratic nomination in the 11th congressional district.

"I am convinced that Leslie Byrne is our best candidate," Webb said in a statement." Leslie shares my values about economic fairness and the need to re-order our national security policies - both in Iraq and throughout the world. In her service as a state legislator and member of Congress, Leslie Byrne has demonstrated time and again that she is tough, fiercely independent and willing to stand up to powerful special interests. I would be proud to serve in Congress with her."

Great news - thanks to Jim Webb and GO LESLIE!

P.S. Chap's in the photo as well because he endorsed Leslie too. :)

P.P.S. For those who don't remember, Leslie Byrne was one of Jim Webb's earliest and strongest supporters in early 2006.  In essence, Byrne gave Webb the "Democratic Seal of Approval" he needed. Byrne's top opponent this year, Gerry Connolly, was a strong supporter of Harris Miller.

UPDATE: There's more to the press release that wasn't in Tim Craig's original story:

"The Democratic Party has fielded outstanding candidates for the primary, including Gerry Connolly - the Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  The winner of our primary must be able to serve effectively in the House of Representatives and reflect the values that are important to citizens in the 11th District.  Through their service in the community and in government, our leading candidates can certainly do that.

"As the primary season begins, I look forward to a positive and spirited contest in the 11th District.  As in my 2006 Senate campaign and the governor races that preceded it, and as with the recent Presidential primary, I hope we can continue to attract new people to the Democratic Party and its ideals.  At the end of this process, I expect 11th District Democrats to stand united behind our nominee.  And I expect us to win in November."

I expect us to win in November as well -- with Leslie Byrne as our nominee.  Go Leslie!

One to go. I'm waiting for Jim Webb to endorse Barack Obama already.

Agreed (Catzmaw - 3/6/2008 5:24:11 PM)
Plus, wouldn't an Obama endorsement go nicely with that wonderful diary from Faithfull about Obama's need to hit the Appalachians?

That's some good, ol-fashioned Jim Webb Greatness! (The Grey Havens - 3/6/2008 6:29:44 PM)
The great thing about Jim Webb is that you can count on him to support Virginia Democrats!

Leslie was there for Jim, and he's going to be there for her in this race.

Great work Jim Webb!

As Jim Webb always said (Lowell - 3/6/2008 6:31:02 PM)
you've got to be loyal to your people.  And Leslie is definitely one of Webb (and Webb's supporters) people.

Interesting dynamic here (Eric - 3/6/2008 7:54:02 PM)
Webb actually has two reasons to support Leslie - first because she supported him and second, because her main opponent (Connolly), actively worked against Webb.  So he has a reason to be for her AND a reason to be against her opponent.

As for the Obama endorsement people want from Webb - there isn't the same dynamic.  In fact, I believe both Clintons did do some campaigning for Webb.  I don't recall what Obama did during the Webb campaign.  So there is certainly no push-pull for Webb doing a Presidential endorsement.  It may still happen, but it's not a no-brainer like the 11th district endorsement.

Good news. She is a great candidate. (Barbara - 3/6/2008 9:49:44 PM)
But the Presidential endorsement is going to be interesting.  I remember Obama at two campaign rallys for Webb.  Also both Clintons; Hillary in Alexandria around Sept. (I think--could be wrong) and of course, Bill at the huge Alexandria Court House rally the night before the election.  I'm really curious to see who Webb endorses.

Obama campaigned for Webb (Lowell - 3/6/2008 11:22:34 PM)
and did a great job. So did Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Obama Helped Webb A Lot (phillip123 - 3/7/2008 1:15:58 PM)
Barack Obama stumped for Webb on multiple occasions.  In Alexandria he drew thousands to a rally to get people involved with the campaign.  2006 was a team effort, Obama stumped all over the country helping to ensure a democratic majority.

Here is the rest of Webb's endorsement mentioning Connolly... (The Economist - 3/7/2008 12:28:35 AM)
Typical of RK, we only get the part of the story they want to spin.  Here is the rest of Senator Jim Webb's press release, courtesy of NLS:

Actually, you're wrong (Lowell - 3/7/2008 9:09:02 AM)
The original diary was written based on Tim Craig's story in the Washington Post.  Craig's story -- which was the "scoop," as I noted -- only included the part of the press release I included in the diary.  Later, I found that there was more to the press release, but it sounded like a bunch of political mumbo-jumbo to me, basically saying "can't we all just get along."  That's wonderful, but the fact is that Leslie Byrne is the candidate most of us support here at Raising Kaine.  If you're such a big Gerry Connolly fan, I suggest you start your own blog where you can sing his praises, whatever those may be.  I'm sure it will be a fascinating, well-written and popular addition to the Virginia blogosphere. (end snark)

just behold that (Sui Juris - 3/7/2008 10:52:10 AM)
community building!

Just stating the facts. (The Economist - 3/7/2008 8:20:20 PM)
If my pointing out that RK only told part of the story about Jim Webb's press release was such heresy, why did you then post an update on the front page containing the same words that I posted on this diary?

What makes you think that I am a Connolly fan?  I just wanted to point out that there was more to the press release than met the eye on RK.

I like Byrne, I like Connolly, and I like Denneny.  I have yet to make up my mind. Your spin that leaving out valuable information from a press release -- specifically the unusual fact that Webb had kind words for Connolly in a statement supporting Byrne -- because it sounded like "mumbo jumbo" is a pretty weak argument.

You shouldn't be so sensitive, snarky and dismissive of other points of view.  Is this a "community" or a "closed community?"

And your point is? (Eric - 3/7/2008 10:38:31 AM)
Aside from Lowell's response, how does the additional Webb statement change the fact that he endorsed Leslie?  So Webb didn't bust Connolly balls (IMO he had every right to, but he took the high road.  Good for Webb).  The main point of the story is that Webb is endorsing Byrne instead of Connolly.

Not hugely surprising, but good news for Byrne (Craig - 3/6/2008 6:49:08 PM)
Connolly was, as I recall, a backer of Miller in 2006, while Byrne backed Webb.  Frankly I think Byrne has advantage already, but the endorsement can't hurt.

Add this.. (Terry85 - 3/6/2008 7:12:28 PM)
to Byrne's already long list of endorsements.

If I were still in Virginia (JohnBruhns - 3/6/2008 7:34:01 PM)
I would do anything I could do for Leslie Byrne -- she is a great leader.
