Word is Keith Hummel M.D. of Westmoreland Co. may challenge Congressman Rob Wittman this November. Dr. Hummel lives in Montross, has worked in an ER, and owns a winery. He considers himself to be a "Reagan Democrat" but he's a proponent of universal health-care and is a passionate populist on economic issues. He knows he's a long-shot in this horribly gerrymandered district, but he's looking forward to helping put Mark Warner in the U.S. Senate and a Democrat in the White House as well this fall.

UPDATE: Dr. Hummel recently informed me that he does not consider himself to be a Reagan Democrat.

Let's field a full slate (Ron1 - 3/2/2008 11:37:10 PM)
Right now, it looks like the 1st District is the only district going unopposed by Dems. I guess Ted Hontz and Phil Forgit aren't going to be running? Regardless, it's good news that 1st District Dems will get someone to vote for.

We know we have good, solid challengers in the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, and 11th, but I haven't seen any mention around here that there is also a candidate in the 4th:

Andrea Miller

The 4th is only an R + 5 district, like the 2nd, 5th, and 10th, so in theory this district can be competitive. The 4th has a large percentage of black voters (around 30%, I believe), so with a motivated base of Dems, I could really see this district being winnable if Ms. Miller (or someone else) can catch fire.

You're correct about Forgit (Chris Guy - 3/3/2008 12:32:13 AM)
he's not running again. I haven't heard officially that Hontz is passing, but my guess is that's the case.

Dr. Hummel met with the Mathews County Democrats Saturday 4-5-08 (jbkenley - 4/6/2008 5:50:56 PM)
Dr. Hummel met with the Mathews County Democrats Saturday 4-5-08 following their monthly meeting. It had been a long day for many members with a public meeting they sponsored on Climate Change that morning followed  by a long business meeting at 2 pm , never the less they stayed to listen to and discuss with Keith Hummel M.D. run for the House of Representatives.  I for one was very impressed by his response when i listed the strengths of the incumbent in a question to him. Dr. Hummel countered with his list of Whitman's weakness. Times have changed in just one year.  Later at home Betty and i reviewed what we had experienced.  When we read in the Daily Press that the incumbent Whitman's radio address concerning the Iraq war is  opposite to that of  Virginia's recently elected Senator Webb , we concluded Dr. Hummel is correct in his belief the people of this district do not want a continuation of the Bush administration. Whitman spoke as a Bush/Chaney clone. Our people want change. I believe Dr. Hummel is a messenger  committed to that change. He is a messenger with a message and with substantial funding he can win. He is willing to take the challenge with our support.
