RK Hits 2 Million Visits Mark

Sometime last night, RK passed the 2 million visits mark.  When Eric, Brian and I started this little blog back in early 2005, we never had any idea it would get this big, that's for damn sure. In fact, if we had realized that, maybe we would have thought better of it.  Oh well, too late for that now. :)  Seriously, though, thanks for all your support and contributions to the #1 progressive community blog in Virginia.

By the way, our monthly visits have been increasing fast year-over-year.  In January 2008, for instance, we had 93,569 visits, up 87% from the 50,029 visits in January 2007.  This month, it looks like we're on track for about 140,000 visits, which would represent nearly a tripling from the 52,318 visits in February 2007.  In part, of course, that's the result of an active political season, with presidential primaries -- including one that mattered here in Virginia -- leading to increased interest and readership.

But  more than that, state-level blogs are growing in Virginia and across the country, as people increasingly turn to them for news they can't necessarily get elsewhere, such as in their local newspaper.  I see no reason why this trend won't continue in years to come. \

P.S. The monthly record for visits to RK was 127,247 in October 2006, just before the Webb-Allen election. It looks like we'll break that this month.

Congratulations with reservations (dsvabeachdems - 2/23/2008 9:39:39 AM)
Unfortunately, not all blogs are equal. So while more and more people turn to blogs for their news, that is no indication that the general population is better served or informed.

This is an interactive media that can be hijacked at the click of a mouse. There is no well defined rigor or ethic. This will take time.

Fortunately, the market seems to bear out the fact that RK does not suffer the ills of other blogs. It has been a significantty positive force in Virginia politics.

It's not unique to the blogs. (Lowell - 2/23/2008 9:59:23 AM)
Take TV. Please.  I mean, what gets more viewers, the garbage network "news" or quality programs like the NewsHour?  Take racio. Please. What gets more listeners, idiot talk shows or Dianne Rehm?  Finally, take magazines.  Please.  What gets more readership, Us or The Economist?  I think what we have here is a broader phenomenon than just the blogosphere...

I am pleased to report that "Us" was at first lost on me (dsvabeachdems - 2/23/2008 10:23:54 AM)
But an important distinction is that I can't share my reaction to US immediately with the universe. Nor, fortunately, can the usual Us readership.

Nevertheless, this blog has changed Virginia politics and I enjoy the frustration of those who have tried to counter its influence.

And as RK keeps reaching more people... (Kindler - 2/23/2008 12:33:39 PM)
...Virginia keeps electing more and more Dems, from Kaine to Webb to the new Senate majority.

Coincidence -- or something more?  (Cue scary music...)

Congrats!!! (elevandoski - 2/23/2008 1:06:29 PM)
I'm so proud of you guys!  Us little blogs would be nothing if it wasn't for you.  Thanks so much for pioneering the effort.

Raising Kaine started off as a "little blog" (Lowell - 2/23/2008 1:30:11 PM)
and has grown to be a "medium blog," I guess.  There's nothing stopping any other blogger from becoming a "medium" or even a "big" blog, just dedication really...

Wow.. (Terry85 - 2/23/2008 7:03:52 PM)
Congrats guys.
