Sen. Allen Goes Hard Right on Hate Crimes

I expected Sen. Allen to make a hard right turn as he positioned himself for a possible '08 run.  But not this far right:

Sen. George Allen, R-Va., after coming under fire from some social conservatives for a 2004 vote, plans to reverse course next time and oppose making hate crimes against gay people a federal offense.

"When it comes before the Senate again, he will vote against adding sexual orientation to federal hate-crimes statutes," Mike Thomas, Allen's state director, said yesterday. In 2004, Allen voted the opposite way on an amendment in the Senate ...

Allen is preparing to seek re-election to the Senate next year and may run for president in 2008.

Not only is Allen flip-flopping in the most crave way possible - for pure political gain - he is also playing politics with violent crimes and hateful discrimination.  Unbelievable.  Note that Sen. John Warner also voted for this legislation in 2004, so Allen is moving away from moderate Republicans.

But, this begs another question:  Should Virginians vote for a Senator who has other priorities ahead of representing Virginia?  It's only 2005, and Allen is already using his duty to Virginians to further his personal political goals.  And expect more of this behavior as we get closer to the presidential election, not less.
