This Tuesday (December 6), California will hold a special election to fill a vacant House seat in California's 48th Congressional District.  This is important, because it's a good chance for Democrats to pick up the seat formerly held by conservative Republican Chris Cox, chairman of the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) since August 4, 2005.  Democrats have a good chance of winning this seat, with a strong candidate named Steve Young running against  According to "anthonyLA" on DailyKos:

Steve Young, the Democratic candidate, has a unique chance to win this traditionally republican seat because there are two right-wing candidates who will split the right-wing vote.  One is Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the Minutemen Project and the other is the Republican John Campbell.  Gilchrist has managed to gain a considerable amount of support, based on his anti-immigration position (which resonates with many in CA-48) and Campbell will pull votes from the GOP party faithful.

Meanwhile, voter turnout on Tuesday is expected to be QUITE low (the primary had less than 25% turnout), but the district has over 100,000 registered Democrats, and tens of thousands of Independents.  With numbers like those, GOTV could swing the election for Young and create national good press for the Democratic surge.

In other words, Young could win but he'll need our help.  To find out how, go here.  And don't think you can't help just because you live in Virginia.  Among other things, you can e-mail your California friends or do "virtual phone banking" from anywhere.  Let's keep the Democratic momentum going, the same momentum that carried Tim Kaine to victory on November 7th.  Let's help elect Steve Young to Chris Cox's former seat in Congress.  Thanks.
