You may have seen that the obituary for former Delegate Mitch Van Yahres, who died last Friday, included the following:
His friends, who nearly included everyone who met him, are asked, in lieu of expenditures on flowers and the like, to make a healthy and significant contribution to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama or, if they insist, the charity of their choice.

Well, Tuesday night, at 7:30 -- after the polls had closed and Barack Obama had been declared the winner of Virginia's primary, Barack called Betty Van Yahres to express his condolences.

Half an hour after three networks called Virginia in his column, Obama placed a telephone call at about 7:30 p.m. to Charlottesville resident Betty Van Yahres to express his condolences over the death Friday of her husband, former Del. Mitchell Van Yahres.

"I almost fell over," Van Yahres said an hour after she took Obama's call. "He made my day. I've been sad."

Obama had read that the obituary for the former Charlottesville mayor and 24-year delegate had included a sentence asking friends "to make a healthy and significant contribution to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama."

That was a classy touch.

That reminds me (Chris Guy - 2/14/2008 1:09:55 AM)
of a story I read a few weeks ago about a boy in Colorado who was in a serious accident and had to undergo rehab. The kid was a big fan of Obama's apparently and told one of his nurses that he wanted to make a difference in the world. Sen. Obama then wrote to the boy personally and gave him some advice on how to do just that.
........

Ah, I found the article here
