Are you really predicting... (jeisrael - 2/8/2008 11:35:49 AM)
An Obama/McEachin ticket?

NO!!!!! (Scripple - 2/8/2008 11:37:31 AM)
OBAMA-BRINK!
OBAMA-BRINK!
OBAMA-BRINK!

Now there's one I could get behind! (Clemgo3165 - 2/8/2008 12:22:00 PM)
GO BOB!

wow (Scripple - 2/8/2008 11:39:16 AM)
In all seriousness, think about this.

2001:
President George W. Bush
Senator George Allen
Senator John Warner
Governor Jim Gilmore

2009:
President Barack Obama
Senator Mark Warner
Senator Jim Webb
Governor Tim Kaine

Correction... (Jack Landers - 2/8/2008 11:42:20 AM)
2009:
President Barack Obama
Vice President Jim Webb
Senator Mark Warner
Senator Creigh Deeds
Governor Tim Kaine

Correction (NGB - 2/8/2008 11:55:16 AM)
2009:
President Barack Obama
Vice President Jim Webb
Senator Mark Warner
Senator Chap Petersen
Governor Tim Kaine

God, that would be sweet (DanG - 2/8/2008 7:00:36 PM)

Correction (elevandoski - 2/8/2008 11:55:20 AM)
2009:
President Barack Obama
Vice President Jim Webb
Senator Mark Warner
Senator Creigh Deeds
Governor Brian Moran

haha... (NGB - 2/8/2008 11:58:12 AM)
This is a fun game.

No way Creigh should get the nod.

He couldn't even win a general election tailor made for him in 2005.

The Speculation Game (Scripple - 2/8/2008 12:26:16 PM)
So if Jim Webb gets the VP nod, who would Governor Kaine appoint to be Mark Warner's junior senator?

Appointing Creigh allows him to run an incumbent's campaign in 2010, while Brian is free to focus on the Governor's race.

How about some other rampant speculation?

U.S. Senator Adam Ebbin? Imagine, the first openly gay senator comes from Virginia!!!

U.S. Senator Dickie Cranwell?

U.S. Senator Mary Margaret Whipple?

U.S. Senator Larry Sabato?

Or is this the best chance to finally have a U.S. Senator Harris Miller????

Lowell, can we have a separate thread for this rampant speculation???

McEachin for Secretary of Badass!!!! (The Grey Havens - 2/8/2008 11:40:45 AM)

I don't get it. (perkinsms - 2/8/2008 11:57:18 AM)
Webb won in VA in one of the worst election climates in Republican history, against an opponent that was seriously discredited by his own actions.  The margin of victory was about 700 votes, and Webb did not obtain a majority.

Webb's credentials for this state are impeccable, with just the right amount of conservative cross-over appeal (served with Reagan, supports gun rights) to blunt concerns among right-leaning independents to sway the vote.

Webb's election represented the 51st Democrat in a divided Senate, and a major victory in Virginia.  His election resulted in a change in leadership at the top, keeping Cheney from being able to cast multiple tie-breaking votes.

If Webb is recruited for the VP slot, what assurance is there that this "perfect storm" will come together again to ensure a Democrat retains his seat?

Just a thought.  I'm just wondering why there's so much enthusiasm for a Obama/Webb ticket when there are consequences for Virginia and the Senate.

Maybe because Webb (Lowell - 2/8/2008 12:19:46 PM)
ROCKS?!? :)

Eh, I'd still prefer Kaine (True Blue - 2/8/2008 12:29:35 PM)
Kaine is a campaigning animal, while Webb is happy where he is now, as a defense and foreign policy wonk in the Senate.

would give up governorship to Repubs (teacherken - 2/8/2008 12:41:35 PM)
and Kaine won't do that

Actually (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/8/2008 2:16:00 PM)
I believe the margin of victory for Jim Webb was an order of magnitude larger---about 9,000 votes.

I share the concerns on what happens with Webb's seat once he vacates it.  What would happen in 2012?  With Webb, chances of a reelection in that seat are REALLY good.  I don't know about that if it's someone else....

Be still my beating heart, I hope so!! :) (beachmom - 2/8/2008 12:03:15 PM)

Where oh where is Webb's Obama Endoresement?? (TMSKI - 2/8/2008 12:30:49 PM)
With the Webbheads predominately supporting Obama .... the refrain of "Where's Webb" from the draftjameswebb days comes back to haunt me.

Webb Endorsement (perkinsms - 2/8/2008 1:39:20 PM)
I already wrote to Webb (and Jim Moran) encouraging him to endorse Obama, or at least commit to voting his superdelegate vote for the winner of the unpledged delegates.

For what it's worth, I encourage you to do the same.  Maybe a flood of constituent mail would help make the decision easier...

There's a number of folks wondering... (elevandoski - 2/8/2008 2:58:24 PM)
I get a lot of google hits to VB Dems with the terms Obama Webb.

Not bad either! (Lowell - 2/8/2008 12:59:24 PM)

Not bad either!

Another good one, this time with Leslie Byrne (Lowell - 2/8/2008 1:15:53 PM)
and Creigh Deeds as well.

Notice Ingrid Morroy right behind Obama? (Lowell - 2/8/2008 1:19:33 PM)
She's standing next to Libby Garvey and behind Toddy Puller.

Most of the electeds (Ingrid - 2/8/2008 4:11:42 PM)
in this pictures are Sen. Obama endorsers!

I meant "picture"... (Ingrid - 2/8/2008 4:12:52 PM)

An Obama Webb ticket! (AnonymousIsAWoman - 2/8/2008 1:29:12 PM)
I was once the biggest naysayer of that.  But with Romney out of the race and McCain the frontrunner for the Republicans, I think Webb brings a lot of value to the Obama ticket. Besides the obvious military, defense  and national security expertise, Webb is serious about veterans issues, the economy, workers' rights, etc.

And having a Virginian on the ticket would really put our state in play for November. Possibly Florida too because of the strong military presence in that state, combined with African Americans and senior citizens who are Democrats anyway.

We have several excellent candidates who can step in to the senate seat too and hold it for the Democrats while picking up two Southern states (Virginia and Florida in the presdiential race)

Webb is the perfect running mate for Obama (Lowell - 2/8/2008 1:31:29 PM)
As soon as Obama secures the nomination, that's the next order of business -- make sure Webb is on the ticket with him!

How do senate seats get filled in VA? (perkinsms - 2/8/2008 1:42:10 PM)
How would the newly vacated seat get filled?  Appointment by Kaine only, does the VA legislature have to consent, is there a special election in 2008?

I believe this is the case in Virginia (Lowell - 2/8/2008 1:53:03 PM)
From CSPAN:

Senate vacancies are usually filled by an appointment of an interim Senator by the governor of the state or by a state-wide special election scheduled by the governor.

Obama-Webb (mjames - 2/8/2008 2:03:33 PM)
My dream scenario follows this timeline:

Nov. 2008: Obama-Webb win the Presidency
Jan. 2009: Webb vacates Senate seat to assume Vice Presidency
Jan. 2009: Gov. Tim Kaine appoints an interim senator (Deeds or Peterson)
Nov. 2009: Moran wins the VA Governor's race to replace the term-limited Kaine
Jan. 2010: Kaine steps down as governor and declares intention to run for Webb's old senate seat
Nov. 2010: Kaine wins Webb's senate seat for two years
Nov. 2012:Kaine wins reelection for full term to US Senate

Wow, that's brilliant! (Lowell - 2/8/2008 2:05:36 PM)
Seriously, that totally rocks - thanks! :)

Dang! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/8/2008 2:20:10 PM)
Now that'd be cool!

I'll third it... (Scripple - 2/8/2008 2:24:12 PM)
Great idea!!!

Obama-Webb (mjames - 2/8/2008 2:28:12 PM)
How can we convey this suggested scenario to the relevant parties, and would they go for it?

Start a "Draft Webb for VP" movement? (Lowell - 2/8/2008 2:32:54 PM)
Just a thought... :)

2010 Primary (SullyEsq - 2/8/2008 3:23:38 PM)
Would interim Senator Deeds or Peterson quietly step aside when Kaine runs for Webb's Senate seat?  If he didn't, would Kaine run against an incumbent he appointed?

And Deeds and Peterson are going to be willing to (aznew - 2/8/2008 7:07:13 PM)
keep the deskchair over there in the Hart Office Building warm for Tim Kaine because...?

forgot 1 final thing.... (chiefsjen - 2/9/2008 11:46:51 AM)
2012 obama/webb win re-election....2016 PRESIDENT JIM WEBB with VP Mark Warner.

i swear to god, if obama picks webb as his running mate you will not be able to measure my happiness in any defineable terms.

oh please, please, please let it happen!!!

nuh-uh (DanG - 2/9/2008 7:07:18 PM)
Prez and VP can't be from the same state.  Webb-Warner wouldn't work unless one of them moved.

Too bad Kaine wouldn't appoint himself (The Grey Havens - 2/8/2008 4:17:32 PM)
If Leslie had won in 2005, he's have that option.

Obama-Webb (mjames - 2/8/2008 4:41:41 PM)
"... the greatest realignment in modern politics would take place rather quickly if the right national leader found a way to bring the Scots-Irish and African Americans to the same table...  - Sen. Jim Webb"

Awesome quote, and an omen of a match made in heaven.

i love that man! (chiefsjen - 2/9/2008 11:48:23 AM)
just a dream come true it would be...
