Donna Edwards for Congress

I just wanted to take a break from Virginia politics for a moment to endorse Donna Edwards for Congress in Maryland's 4th district primary Tuesday.  Aside from the fact that my friend, former Webb for Senate Deputy Campaign Manager Adrienne Christian, is running Donna Edwards' campaign, there are many reasons to support the challenger in this race.

1. Donna Edwards is co-founder and executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence and a leader in the successful fight to pass the Violence Against Women Act of 1994.

2. According to her website, she "led efforts to reform our campaign finance system and lobbying laws, first with Public Citizen and then as the executive director for the Center for a New Democracy."

3. She is executive director of the Arca Foundation, "dedicated to the pursuit of social equity and justice."

4. She really "gets it" on climate change, supporting mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions to reduce them 80% -- what the science says is needed -- by mid-century. She doesn't "buy the hype" about so-called "clean coal," which tells me that she is a well-informed person on energy and environmental issues.

5. She opposes the credit-card-industry-written bankruptcy bill that Congressman Wynn voted for in 2005.
6. On Iran, she has this to say:

Iranian threats to eliminate the state of Israel are unacceptable and should be taken seriously.  But, it is also essential that the U.S. engage in a serious diplomatic effort with Iran that addresses all issues of concern, including Iran's nuclear program, Iranian opposition to the peace process, including assistance to groups that deploy violence to this end and a shared approach to stabilizing Iraq.

I couldn't agree more.

7. She will be a champion for human rights and labor rights around the world.

8. She has endorsed Barack Obama for president (in fairness, so has her opponent, Albert Wynn).

9. Aside for his support of the onerous bankruptcy bill, he incumbent, Albert Wynn, was "one of only a few members of the Congressional Black Caucus to support the resolution authorizing the invasion of Iraq."  Wynn also has "led efforts to bring casinos to the district."  He also "Voted YES on deauthorizing 'critical habitat' for endangered species."

Clearly, Donna Edwards is the best choice, from a progressive perspective, in Maryland's 4th district. I strongly support her nomination.

I have some unusual visability into the NNEDV she founded (Used2Bneutral - 2/8/2008 11:48:12 AM)
The organization Donna help create has the most progressive and effective team in the sector they operate. The NNEDV organiztion even takes on the government agencies and courts as sometimes the only defense the Domestic Violence movement has to defend the interests of those that need the help the most, the victims.... In fact they have the only real program that addresses the dangers and the values of the Internet. http://www.nnedv.org/ourprogra...

Donna was among those responsible for helping create this amazingly effective organization..... She Rocks!!!

GO DONNA! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/8/2008 2:09:24 PM)
She clearly gets it.  If I end up moving to Maryland this year as planned (of course selling a house is NOT EASY right now...), I will be happy to have Donna Edwards as a member of my state's delegation, even though I'll be Chris Van Hollen's district.

DONNA ROCKS!!!
