Not killed yet, but (aznew - 2/7/2008 3:07:39 PM)
the formidable Larry Sabato doesn't think it will survive.

A little off-topic, aren't we? (Catzmaw - 2/7/2008 3:18:09 PM)
You've got nothing to say about Brian Moran's argument in favor of funding Alicia's Law?  If you want to track legislation you can always go to Richmond Sunlight, but I'm curious about why you'd introduce a question about Creigh Deeds into a diary about Brian Moran.

Agreed. (Lowell - 2/7/2008 3:19:11 PM)
That was a totally off topic and inappropriate comment for this thread.

Wow, fantastic argument. I'd sure vote to convict. (Catzmaw - 2/7/2008 3:15:56 PM)
Once again, the Republicans in the General Assembly will pass legislation to make it look like we're doing something about a problem, but then refuse to fund it because taxes are evil and  gummint is evil and we shouldn't have to spend money on anything.

You're right, Lowell, Brian's impassioned argument shows what real leadership is all about.

It's Disgusting (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 3:25:55 PM)
I work at the General Assembly and in the House, every time a Democrat comes up with a good idea the Republicans do one of two things:

1) Shoot down the Democrat's bill and reintroduce it from one of their members

2) Pass it by indefinitely, and ignore that the issue ever came up, as they seem to be doing in this video.

Mr. Moran said nothing wrong, and everything right, in that speech, those pathetic Republicans didn't applaud for one reason only:  They're afraid of the man and what he stands for.  Their regressive useless good-ol-boy politics failed in 2005 with Kaine's victory, in 2006 with Allen's fall, and in 2007 with the switch of parties in the Senate.

Amen Mr. Moran!  Show them who's boss!

What the?? (GeorgetownStudent - 2/7/2008 3:39:46 PM)
Brian Moran is supposed be pushing that bill in the House. Sorry if I was being SO inappropriate in asking about a bill HE'S supposed to be sponsoring.

This diary is on Alicia's Law (Lowell - 2/7/2008 3:42:12 PM)
Do you have any thoughts on that subject?

If you'd written something (Catzmaw - 2/7/2008 4:00:08 PM)
like "great speech.  Oh, by the way, does anyone know about the bill Creigh introduced which Brian is cosponsoring" you wouldn't have been accused of going off-topic.  If you're honestly confused about this please go back, watch the video, read the topic of the diary, and then read your post and ask yourself if you wouldn't have thought the post was an attempt to draw attention away from Brian Moran's work.  It was sort of like watching someone try to take a picture of one person, only to have another person keep running up and try to get into the picture.

Self Evident (GeorgetownStudent - 2/7/2008 4:02:31 PM)
Obviously I feel that it is amazing how passionately he spoke on the House floor regarding how it hasn't even been funded. However, what is this blog? The Guardian Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran? Individuals should be allowed to discuss political matters on these threads as long as they are  somewhat related. That's the nature of civil society and public discourse. I did not say something like, "OMG Brian Moran's hair is sooo hot in the video." I simply asked about a bill he is sponsoring. It is not inappropriate for me to say that, its inappropriate for individuals to attempt to silence me.

And people have a right to tell you (Lowell - 2/7/2008 4:06:03 PM)
what they think about what you write.  That's part of "civil society and public discourse" as well.

Yes, (GeorgetownStudent - 2/7/2008 4:16:17 PM)
but what kind of professional public discourse solely wants to spin everything just to make a point. That's called propaganda. What was even your point in posting that video? So you would get 50 comments saying, "wowwww how charismatic!!!" Well I decided to focus on something else because I knew that those comments would come in anyway.

The nature of this forum (Catzmaw - 2/7/2008 5:40:37 PM)
is that it is a progressive political website.  When a diary is posted the diarist is seeking to make a point and anyone reading the diary is free to agree, disagree, or comment upon that point.  You ask what Lowell's point was in posting the video.  It's well known, at least among anyone following Virginia Democratic politics, that Creigh Deeds and Brian Moran will soon be vying with each other for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.  The point of posting the video was to demonstrate Brian's leadership capabilities.

In the coming months there will be a lot of debate and discussion among diarists here about which of these eminently well-suited candidates is the best-suited for the job.  You are a fan of Creigh's.  That's fine.  He's got plenty of other advocates in this forum and you will be welcome to join the fray and make your points.  Others among us are Brian Moran fans.  Sometimes the discussions get a little acerbic, but as long as it doesn't degenerate into moronic name-calling all discussion is welcome.

I suspect from your screen name that you are probably pretty new to politics and a relatively new voter.  I don't want you to feel that anybody is trying to Taliban you or anything like that.  It's just the nature of politics that everyone is entitled to everyone else's opinion.  I'm just tickled to death that you're actually interested and hope you will continue to take an interest and express your opinion.

BTW, I am neutral between Creigh and Brian (Lowell - 2/7/2008 5:44:56 PM)
at the time being.  I posted the video because I think it rocked!  If Creigh gets up and gives a speech like this on, say, the environment, I'll post that in a heartbeat!

Civility, Please (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 6:22:35 PM)
Lowell, Catzmaw: I agree with you two in saying that GeorgetownStudent's post was off topic, but I wish you didn't assault him/her so strongly.  Too often do I read tirades by Ben Tribett driving commenters off his blog because they stood up for opposing views one too many times.  I know we're better than that, and I also know that you weren't doing that, you were just pointing out the irrelevancy of GeorgetownStudent's post, but I feel you may have made him/her feel unwelcome.

GeorgetownStudent: please please do not feel unwelcome at this blog.  I feel this is one of the greatest and freest open forums I've ever encountered (for Democrats, at least).

Agreed, I may have come on too strong (Catzmaw - 2/7/2008 8:17:03 PM)
which is why I followed up with an explanation and a welcome to GeorgetownStudent for participating.  I'm a little intense but don't want anyone to feel unwelcome.

Yeah, may have overreacted (Lowell - 2/7/2008 8:39:32 PM)
Things are a bit crazy/tense these days. :)

Wow (brimur - 2/7/2008 4:57:36 PM)
Very powerful speech Brian! Keep at it!
