Romney to Drop Out This Afternoon? [UPDATE: He's Out!]

According to Chris Cillizza, Mitt Romney "is considering whether to pull out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination" and "could happen as soon as his speech at the Conservative Political Action Committee conference this afternoon."

So far, Romney has spent $1.16 million per delegate.  As a shrewd businessman, perhaps he realizes that this is not a good investment of his money?

If Romney does drop out, does that clinch it for John McCain, or does it give Mike Huckabee new life?  What do you think?

P.S. Bill Bolling endorsed Romney; so much for that coveted Cabinet post! :)

UPDATE 12:23 pm:  CNN reports, "Republican Mitt Romney to suspend campaign."

UPDATE by ROB:  Of course, this means that the Democratic primary is the only primary that matters in Virginia this Tuesday.  A vote in the GOP primary is a rubber stamp of John McCain.  A vote in the Democratic primary will have real meaning for a still contested race.

UPDATE by Lowell: Good point by Rob.  This also means that independents -- I realize we don't register by party in Virginia, I'm talking about people who don't identify strongly with either party -- will be more likely to vote in the Democratic primary.

UPDATE 12:56 PM: The AP writes that "John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign."  It's over, folks, John McCain's the Republican nominee.  The Democrats, on the other hand...could be a loooong while.  Needless to say, this was NOT the plan by the "powers that be" in either party.  Ah, Democracy! :)

UPDATE 1:38 PM: An utterly bizarre statement by an utterly bizarre candidate: "...in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror."  Huh?? He dropped out so we don't lose the "war on terror?"  My. God.

The crossover vote in Virginia (aznew - 2/7/2008 1:49:20 PM)
How soon until we start seeing the suggestion that Republicans will now crossover to the Democratic side to vote for Hillary Clinton and nefariously boost the weaker candidate?

5....4....3....2....

Don't worry (citizenindy - 2/7/2008 5:32:46 PM)
never happens in any serious numbers will have less than 1% impact on the results

I would also like to take this opportunity (citizenindy - 2/7/2008 5:34:20 PM)
to once again say thank you to the Webbheads for taking down Allen

Given how much they hate Clinton and McCain right now... (ericy - 2/7/2008 6:32:58 PM)

You might have more of them crossing over to vote Obama..

I think there could be significant cross overs.. (Barbara - 2/7/2008 7:29:08 PM)
And I think they will vote for Hillary.

Hilarious (Sui Juris - 2/7/2008 1:53:38 PM)
The closest thing the GOP had to a qualified candidate just got sent packing.  Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy, of course, but still.

Man, I wonder if Tagg & his brothers are a little bitter about what happened to their inheritance?

Romney Promises Crucifiction for Adulterers (The Grey Havens - 2/7/2008 2:03:22 PM)
Will have abortion doctors drawn and quartered on TV until all of the striking writers can be deported.

Looks forward to a day when birth control can be distributed with nano-tech "lojack" systems so that we can track all of the fornicators and

Will eliminate all taxes and self-finance the Federal Government.

Will outlaw the Koran and create a christian state where military service is required for voting rights.

oh, and then he dropped out of the race.

I'm not really sure what he was trying to do here, but it seems like the crowd was happy.

Oh man (butterbean - 2/7/2008 2:26:19 PM)
I was just starting to feel the mittmentum. ;^(

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (JPTERP - 2/7/2008 2:41:20 PM)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This is a sad day for Democrats everywhere.

Curious though -- given that Huckabee was splitting Mitt's vote.  Does this now mean that Huckabee becomes a legitimate challenger to McCain?

heh (Sui Juris - 2/7/2008 4:50:39 PM)
No, it means that Huckabee expects some serious payoff from McCain for helping him destroy Mitt.

Ladies and gentlement, your Republican nominee!!!! (Lowell - 2/7/2008 2:55:09 PM)

Er, "gentlemen" (Lowell - 2/7/2008 2:58:00 PM)

I miss him already (Kindler - 2/7/2008 11:22:52 PM)
He had the charisma of a wart, with news anchor hair and the bearing of a man with a rather sizeable pole up his ass.

Which is why I miss him.  Could you have imagined the margin of victory if this guy had been the nominee?
