Financial news of Bombshell proportions

By: teacherken
Published On: 2/6/2008 10:11:20 PM

This will be brief

Part 1 -  Hillary Clinton sent out an urgent email asking her supporters to do something she has never asked before - to contribute $3 million in the next 72 hours, or $1 million per day.

Part 2 - listening to Keith Olbermann last hour, he said Obama campaign was saying that in the last 24 hours, they had raised. $4.2 million on-line.

Part 3 -  there are Clinton people going without pay, a l Rudy Giuliani in his final throes

Part 4 - Clinton had to loan her campaign $5 million last month

Is the money going to be game, set and match?

UPDATE   figure from Keith now out of date -  a diary posted a while ago at dailykos had figure up to 4.6 million

and there is another diary at dailykos trying to urge people to beat the Ron Paul record of 6 million in a day, although I think a chunk of what came in was last night.

A followup - for Saturday (teacherken - 2/6/2008 10:12:29 PM)
VA Dem party has just put out an email that both Clinton and Obama will be at Jeff-Jack on Saturday.   It will be very interesting to see and compare the receptions.

I will be there with multiple video cameras with press credentials (Used2Bneutral - 2/6/2008 11:46:15 PM)
We will tape, process and post all the speeches by Sunday afternoon on Google Video.... on the Mark Levine show on Sunday night we plan on putting highlights, summaries and analysis and then also putting that live one hour show (6:30 - 7:30 PM) up also so those who can't attend the JJ can still get to see the speeches in their entireity.... Also, there is a chance the speeches will be audio streamed on the internet by our crew LIVE if the internet connection at the site in Richmond will support the traffic.... check with the website at www.RadioInsideScoop.com for the link and blog for the show.... we expect to get Clinton, Obama, Webb, Kaine, and Mark Warner so far.... more if they are there..... the only edited content will be the special one hour analysis Live show on "the Inside Scoop" Sunday night....

As soon as I finish processing and up-loading the speeches on Sunday well after midnight sometime, I will post the link here on RK and several other blogs. I hope this helps get real info in the hands of primary voters.....

Thank you (VaNative - 2/7/2008 9:24:51 AM)
...for posting this.  It inspired me to go to http://www.hillaryclinton.com/ and give more.  Gloating is unattractive in a candidate, especially one in the Democratic Party.

obama phoning at duncan library crowded (pvogel - 2/6/2008 10:15:43 PM)
Lots of very committed  youngsters(Im 51)  making cell phone calls.
very exciting to be in the   action next week.

I hope this doesn't turn into gloating (LAS - 2/6/2008 10:22:27 PM)
Let's save that for the Republicans.

Besides, just because I don't plan to vote for her, doesn't mean I want to see her humiliated.

I guess I kind of feel that they both should win, although the thinking part of me knows this isn't possible.

Whoever wins, whoever loses, let us behave well.

And save our worse selves for the Republicans!

Congrats, Ken (Sui Juris - 2/6/2008 10:28:58 PM)
On what must be the shortest diary you've ever written.

:)

not even close n/t (teacherken - 2/6/2008 10:39:32 PM)

Email from Obama... (elevandoski - 2/6/2008 10:33:14 PM)
null

11,000 / minute in period 8:50 - 9:15 (teacherken - 2/6/2008 10:38:52 PM)
going from $4,532,242 to $4,808,401.

Suckers (Sui Juris - 2/6/2008 10:37:11 PM)
Seriously, at this point, I think sending $$ to either campaign is a serious misallocation of resources.  The ground game is more important now, and both have the money they need to support that.  If you must be a part of lining media consultant's pockets with your money, at least wait until the general election.

Um... (DanG - 2/6/2008 10:38:46 PM)
Money helps FUND the ground game.  Get professionals on the ground, move organizations from state to state, etc.

RIF (Sui Juris - 2/7/2008 12:59:18 AM)
Both campaigns have the money to fund that ground game.  But hey, send another $$$, if it's burning a hole in your pocket.

What's the problem, Grey Havens? (Sui Juris - 2/7/2008 9:42:42 AM)
Don't like any message besides one that says "give give give"?

Grey Havens? (Lowell - 2/7/2008 9:48:08 AM)
I don't even see a comment by Grey Havens in this thread.  Also, the diary was posted by Teacherken, not Grey Havens.

my comment was rated Unproductive, (Sui Juris - 2/7/2008 9:54:33 AM)
by The Grey Havens.  I'm interested in the reasoning behind that.

Ahhh... (Lowell - 2/7/2008 9:55:20 AM)
...I missed that. Sorry.

Cause your being a jackass (DanG - 2/7/2008 10:14:16 AM)
If people want to give money to a cause they believe in, who are you to ridicule them?

Money is key, gives mobility (True Blue - 2/6/2008 10:58:47 PM)
A big part of Obama's staff in Virginia now came from his successful team in South Carolina.  Having cash allows Obama to exploit the mobility of his staff.  If Hillary can't afford to move her staff, she'll have to lay them off and hire (and train) new temporary staff on the fly--never as good.

If we can overwhelm Clinton with a little cash now, we can save ourselves a lot of trouble down the road.

This is all out of date now, (BrianDStraw - 2/6/2008 11:35:42 PM)
Obama is now at $5,542,072.

5.5 million so far (NGB - 2/6/2008 11:36:14 PM)
This is insane

just hit $5.7 million! n/t (Ingrid - 2/7/2008 12:15:11 AM)

Something to know about Clinton's loan (Jeremiahthemessiah - 2/7/2008 12:29:40 AM)
She did it in January.  The money went into Feb. 5th to fend off Obama.  Her 5 million dollar loan is gone.

Just made my donation! (JMU Duke - 2/7/2008 12:31:09 AM)
Jump on the bandwagon!

I would keep this in mind . . . (JPTERP - 2/7/2008 1:04:24 AM)
Even if the Clintons don't spend a dollar, they still have a large chunk of the party base planning to vote for them.  She has the advantages of 100% name ID within the party over the course of the past decade.

Obama on the other hand has to spend money still filling in some of the blanks in the minds of voters about who he is.  His name ID is rising, but there are still unknowns that he has to mollify.

I wouldn't lose sight of the fact that Obama is still the challenger.  The fundraising news helps him in states where the Clintons have fewer built in organizational advantages, but in and of itself it is not decisive.

Yes (RuralD - 2/7/2008 1:15:04 AM)
Obama supporters do need to hedge the expectations game.

Last night should have been seen as a serious body blow for Clinton, but everyone expected Obama to do the impossible.

But that being said, if Obama supporters weren't so crazy, he wouldn't be raising this kind of money.

And I guarantee that the party insiders (supper delegates) are taking notice of this!  Maybe making some people change their mind.

Agreed. (JPTERP - 2/7/2008 1:24:33 AM)
Part of the tough balancing act here is keeping things in perspective.  Money helps a lot, but it isn't alone what wins elections.  Obama needs to keep winning states.

Those super delegates probably are taking notice, but I would imagine they are also looking to see what impact the money has in electoral terms.  It's the vote count that matters most here.

No guarantees.

Also (RuralD - 2/7/2008 1:16:26 AM)
I wont be surprised if Clinton posts some good online fund raising numbers . . . though this would be hard to match.

And supposedly she is behind.

Hil's Finance People Are....... (Flipper - 2/7/2008 1:26:46 AM)
not happy.  One Clinton fundraiser said it was a real downer after they were so up Tuesday night and he was wondering where all that money went.  "It's not a meltdown but it's a distress signal."

Calling Dr. Bombay!

6.2 million (DanG - 2/7/2008 1:57:46 AM)
Impressive to say the least.  Let's just hope that with that kind of cash Obama can compete on Saturday.

Clinton Raising Internet Money Too (RuralD - 2/7/2008 2:19:40 AM)

Supposedly 3 million by 8:30

might be keeping pace with Obama

As long as Obama beats her (DanG - 2/7/2008 2:36:55 AM)
All I care is that we beat her in fundraising.  It keeps momentum with us.
