Welcome to Obama Central on Raising Kaine! You can also follow our Obama coverage with the new "Barack Obama" subject tag, which also has its own RSS feed .

First off, here's Obama's page for Virginia, with polling information and more.  This page also includes a Virginia events page, which you'll find if you click here.

Here's another events page -- but this one has a lot more listings.

If you live in Virginia Beach, get over for some phonebanking at the Stallings and Bischoff Law Offices at 2101 Parks Avenue, Suite 801 (near the Convention Center). That is starting tonight from 5:30pm until 9pm (of course, you can come for 1 or 2 hours as well). We also have a permanent office at 549 E. Brambleton Ave in Norfolk which is open from 9am-9pm. If that is closer to you, you are welcome to come there during the week as well. Feel free to email or call if you have any questions to Nicole Young, Field Organizer, Obama for America - SC, nyoung@barackobama.com.

Go Dems!!!!!!!!

Virginia Superdelegates (erikpdumont - 2/7/2008 11:31:48 AM)
As we're starting to see, this race could come down to the superdelegates.  If you go to http://demconwatch.blogspot.co... you can see the superdelegates who are so far unpledged.  In Virginia, we have Representative Jim Moran from Alexandria still unpledged, Senator Jim Webb, and C. Richard Cranwell of Roanonke, the State Dem Chair who used to back Edwards (http://www.roanoke.com/politics/wb/104970).  Now there is some controversy over activists putting pressure on these people (http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/02/obama-campaign-dont-contact.html).  So take it all with a grain of salt, but if you maybe happen to bump into Representative Moran, Senator Webb, or Chairman Cranwell...or call their office for something else...

Virginia Beach Oceanfront - Barcrawl for Obama Feb. 9th (obamavb - 2/7/2008 1:21:50 PM)
We'll be doing an informal barcrawl for Obama on Feb 9th, starting 7PM at Chicho's Restaurant on 21st and Atlantic.  The reason I call it an informal crawl is because we're not moving from place to place at predetermined times...we'll hang out at Chicho's, eat pizza, and talk Obama, then at 9PM enjoy some beach nightlife while spreading the message.

The event can be found here:  http://my.barackobama.com/page...

Please RSVP if you're interested in coming, and email any questions here or to obamavb@gmail.com.

Also please remember that "Barcrawl for Obama" does not mean "Drinking for Obama."  Come out and have pizza and enjoy the company, and if you DO drink, please do so responsibly and try to locate a designated driver.  We want this to be a safe and fun event for anyone involved.

We hope to see you there!  Let's get the word out in Virginia Beach!

Thanks for the heads up on this one! (elevandoski - 2/7/2008 2:06:43 PM)
I've added it to my sidebar at VBDems.org.

She's our own superdelegate!

I have a comment on the website for you to pass on (demnan - 2/7/2008 3:18:07 PM)
When I clicked to find my polling place it closed the window on the Obama website and opened the Virginia elections page.  It would be better to open this link as a new window so people can go back to the Obama page.

another Fredericksburg event: (Chris Guy - 2/7/2008 3:31:19 PM)
Mary Washington Students for Barack Obama are pleased to welcome Samantha Power to the UMW Campus. Dr. Power is a Pulitzer Prize winning Genocide Scholar and Professor at the Kennedy School of Government. You made the front page! (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 3:37:00 PM)
Congratulations to all of us in the RK community, we're the second news item on the main page of barackobama.com.  I feel slightly important...

Very cool! (Lowell - 2/7/2008 3:43:22 PM)
Great work by Rob et al.

Obama... (SWVA.Observer - 2/7/2008 3:43:53 PM)
can afford to run 13 offices in Virginia, but is unwilling to open any of them west of Charlottesville? He's missing out on a geographic third of the state, and at least a quarter of the state's population. How can he hope to unite the country by refusing to even try and win over rural voters?

FYI (Lowell - 2/7/2008 3:45:39 PM)
Obama is planning to travel to all parts of Virginia. Of course he wouldn't write off rural voters, how absurd.

Lowell... (NGB - 2/7/2008 3:49:42 PM)
Any idea on when/where rally's with BHO will take place?  Besides JJ of course.

I'm going to hold you to that then... (SWVA.Observer - 2/7/2008 3:51:22 PM)
and trust you'll keep the RK community informed of when Senator Obama campaigns west of Charlottesville. He's got six days. ;-)

I think he's going to barnstorm Virginia (Lowell - 2/7/2008 3:51:31 PM)
on Sunday/Monday, after he rocks the house at the JJ Dinner! :)

Excellent... (NGB - 2/7/2008 3:54:12 PM)
I'm going to JJ, but I really want to see him in a rally type atmosphere.

Just so there's no confusion here (Lowell - 2/7/2008 4:04:43 PM)
I have been assured that the campaign will be west of C-ville, both with organizers and events.  Obviously, I am not part of the Obama campaign and have no idea about the candidate's exact schedule.  What I DO know is that he's extremely busy, trying to campaign all across the country, just as Hillary Clinton's doing right now.  It's all a race against the clock -- and candidate exhaustion.

It's been a while (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 4:38:00 PM)
SWVA.Observer

Welcome back.

To be honest I was thinking the same thing.  I'm guessing Clinton will win Boucher's district, but don't say Obama is writing the area off.  There are "Rural Virginians for Obama" etc. on his website.

Facebook for Obama (Hugo Estrada - 2/7/2008 4:15:45 PM)
If you use facebook, you may want to join several Obama groups the next time you log in.

It won't take you too much time, and your joining groups will trigger News Feed Items to your friends.

I see it as sending electronic fliers to your whole network in  one single click.

Once you join there doesn't seem a lot to do in facebook groups, so go back to phonebanking or canvasing. :)

Here is a group that I made to send News Feeds that will say

"Joe Doe joined Virginia Feb 12th Voter for Obama

http://berkeley.facebook.com/g...

Yes we can!
Si se puede!

Correction (Hugo Estrada - 2/7/2008 4:16:44 PM)
"Once you join, there doesn't seem that there is a lot to do in facebook groups."

I need to take a nap :)

Fairfax for Obama (harmonjd - 2/7/2008 4:18:14 PM)
What: Canvass for Barack Kick Off Rally

When: Saturday, February 9, 2008, 9:30 a.m.

Where: Northern Virginia for Obama HQ, 400 N. Washington Street (Route 29), Falls Church, VA

Who: Any Obama supporter willing and able to walk for hours and talk to friendly voters who are already leaning Obama.  You don't need to live in Fairfax to canvass in Fairfax.  In fact, we expect volunteers from all neighboring regions to gather together Saturday morning, then break up into teams and canvass all across the region.

Fairfax for Clinton---NOT!!! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/7/2008 5:50:50 PM)
The Fairfax County electorate should actually be fairly fertile ground for Obama.  Yes there is a Hillary demographic as well, but I believe that much of the affluent, well-educated, and liberal white voters that Obama attracts in the exit polls are here, and also DO NOT forget that the entire Mason, Lee, and Mount Vernon Districts are home to considerable African-American populations, particularly in the I-95 and Route 1 corridors in southeast Fairfax!  WE NEED TO GOTV in those areas!

Speaking of which, if you are interested in helping out in the Mount Vernon or Lee Districts (Alexandria area of Fairfax County, Lorton, Newington, and parts of Springfield) we will be having an organizational meeting at the Kingstowne Library (corner of Beulah and Telegraph Roads) at 7 PM.

If you're interested in helping plan the STRATEGY and ORGANIZATION behind this weekend's GOTV effort and Election Day, please COME.  If you just want marching orders, we'll have those soon and maybe I'll post them in a diary.

We will have calling centers and staging locations for you to come pick up walk lists and materials every day starting Saturday AM.

WE WILL NEED YOU!!

HUNTER MILL (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/7/2008 5:52:46 PM)
FAIRFAX IS OBAMA TERRITORY!!

Big African-American population in Hunter Mill too!

Sorry... (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/7/2008 5:54:46 PM)
I meant this reply for legacyofmarshall below...

Choice between MD and VA (alanrockville - 2/7/2008 4:50:49 PM)
I live in Rockville, used to live in Annandale, work in Alexandria (395 & Seminary). I'll be near Falls Church after 10AM Sat. morning. Wondering where I would be most needed, MD or VA. I hear VA is a closer race. Can someone advise?

Also, any other events I should know about?

Finally, any victory parties scheduled for Tuesday>

Northern Virginia is IT (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 5:19:37 PM)
Simply based on all previous results in the primaries, Maryland and DC will go strongly for Obama: The Democratic voters in both places are primarily Black or Wealthy Whites, two groups that tend to strongly support Senator Obama.

Virginia has rural White Democrats in the Southwest (who will probably support Senator Clinton), and Black Democrats in the Southeast.  In most Democratic Primaries, Northern Virginia accounts for 1/3 to half of all votes, and around my hometown (McLean), I see that many Democrats support Senator Clinton, many support Senator Obama, and MANY MORE are undecided.  If Obama wins Northern Virginia he wins Virginia BIG TIME and has the Potomac Primary wrapped up.

It would be a huge service to get out the vote for Obama in Northern Virginia.  I especially see Arlington and Alexandria as swing areas, while perhaps Fairfax County is more solidly Clinton.

Good luck!

See my comment post above (Doug in Mount Vernon - 2/7/2008 5:53:34 PM)
I meant to reply to you but I ended up replying to harmonjd

That's good news (legacyofmarshall - 2/7/2008 6:05:48 PM)
My entire family will be voting for Obama, and with all luck, they'll convince some friends.  I must say - many Northern Virginian-style Republican friends of ours are excited about Obama and will vote for him next Tuesday - maybe in the General too.

I guess I just felt that way about Fairfax for Senator Clinton because McLean is home to McAuliffe and a whole lot of old school Clinton folk - and it's noticeable.

Latinos and Asians for Obama! (Lowell - 2/7/2008 8:38:11 PM)
Annabel Park asked me to post this for her.  She's busy organizing Asians and Latinos for Obama.   Go Annabel! :)

Dear Obama Supporter,

As many of you know, the new battleground to win the Dem nomination is Virginia.   http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

Latinos for Obama, South Asians for Obama and Asian Americans for Obama are joining forces to coordinate and organize phonebanking house parties across the country targeting Latino and Asian voters in Virginia for the primary on Tuesday, Feb. 12th.

Obama needs you more than ever.  We need you to help us call thousands of voters this weekend.

After the California primary, we know that majority of the voting members of our communities must not be getting the message of change and hope from Obama.  Perhaps something is lost in translation.  Whatever the reason, one thing seems clear -- many voters in our communities do not know enough about Senator Obama.  We need to change that this weekend for the voters in Virginia.  It is up to us.  We are the ones we've been waiting for.

Host or attend a phonebanking party for Obama.
http://www.asianamericansforob...

So far, we have parties being planned in Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.

We will provide you with a phone list, script and instructions.  You can invite just friends or make it open to the public.  You can offer food/beverage or not.  It's up to you.

After you sign up to host a party, we recommend that you use Facebook, mybarackobama.com, evite, myspace and other means to spread the word and manage your event.

Either way, we will have a great time, bring our communities together, and help Barack win the nomination.

Polling (uva08 - 2/7/2008 10:09:15 PM)
Anyone know when (or if) Virginia will start getting polled?

In the 2001 primary, turnout was very light in NOVA....... (Flipper - 2/8/2008 2:46:15 AM)
with most of the action taking place in southeastern and central Virginia.  Now, obviously there will be a great turnout in NOVA and Obama will do well there, which will help Obama carry the state.  And of course, turnout during the 2006 U. S. Senate primary was dominated by NOVA.  But the fight for delegates is the important thing so Obama really needs to do well and will do well in NOVA and  other parts of the state.

In the southeast portion of VA, Obama needs big turnouts in Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg (William and Mary), Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Chespeake to win delegates in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th congressional districts.  The race in Virginia Beach I believe will be the most interesting race to watch between Clinton and Obama.  Clinton should dominate there but Obama just might do better than expected there.  There are also pockets of black voters in counties spread throughout the 4th congressional district (Southampton, Greenville, Sussex, southern Chesterfield County, etc.)that could provide winning margins to pick up delegates.  Several northern neck counties in the 1st congressional district with significant black populations are not to be forgotten either.

Moving up through central Virginia, Charles City County, north and eastern Henrico county and most of the city of Richmond should boost Obama's delegate count in the 3rd congressional district. If Obama can get a huge turnout in the 3rd and win with 70% plus, he might be able to pick up 5 of the six delegates at stake there.

The western part of the city of Richmond, along with the western districts of Henrico and northwestern Chesterfield county are full of affluent, white voters and should boost Obama's delegate counts in the 7th congressional as a big portion of the population in the 7th is centered in Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond.

In addition, according to CNN, Obama is the leading fund raiser among all presidential candidates, Democrats and Republicans, in Chesterfield, Henrico, Goochland, Hanover, city of Richmond, Charles City, and James City county.  Governor Kaine also has had a lot of support in the Richmond suburbs so hopefully he can motivate a significant number of his supporteres to vote for Obama next Tuesday.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/20...

In the 5th congressional district, Charlottesville and Albemarle county should be strong for Obama - students, faculty at UVA, black voters and upscale white voters, minus John Grisham.  In addition, counties with good size black populations, including Buckingham, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittslyvania and the city of Danville should have good turnouts for Obama as well and hopefully boost delgate counts there.

The 6th congressional district is dominated by the city of Roanoke and Roanoke county.  I beleive Harrisonburg (JMU)is in the 6th as well and should be Obama country.  Outside of these three jurisdictions in the 6th, I suspect Clinton will do well.

As far as the 9th congressional is concerned, I think Senator Obama should rent a station wagon, throw Paul Goldman in the back seat and tour southwestern Virginia.

Delegates by CD:

CD 1 - 4 delegates
CD 2 - 4 delegates
CD 3 - 6 delegates
CD 4 - 4 delegates
CD 5 - 4 delegates
CD 6 - 4 delegates
CD 7 - 5 delegates
CD 8 - 7 delegates
CD 9 - 4 delegates
CD 10 - 5 delegates
CD 11 - 6 delegates

Danville, Pittsylvania, and Halifax for Obama? (SWVA.Observer - 2/8/2008 2:55:24 AM)
I'll believe that when I see it.

CD 7,8,10 are the big ones (FredFred - 2/8/2008 11:15:11 AM)
10 probably leans Hillary, 8 probably leans Obama.  CD 7 - does that include any of Richmond City?  If no, that could go Clinton as well.  We could be looking at a situation where Obama cleans up in the districts with even number of delegates but ends up splitting them and then Hillary picks up a slight edge in 2 of the 3 districts with odd number of delegates and then look at a delegate split.

Does Virginia have any state-wide delegates that are NOT superdelegates that are allocated proportionally where Obama could get an edge if he wins say 55-45?

Thx,
-Fred

VA Delegate info from CQ (ari_c - 2/8/2008 12:29:36 PM)
Here's a great resource on all the primaries D & R http://innovation.cq.com/prima...

VA info:
83 pledged, 20 unpledged. Of the 83 pledged: 54 are district-level delegates that will be apportioned based on the Feb. 12 primary results in city and county caucuses in April and then congressional district conventions in May; 11 pledged PLEOs who will be selected at state convention June 7; 18 at-large delegates who will be selected at the state convention June 7.Of the 20 unpledged: 18 are unpledged PLEOs (confirmed by the DNC Secretary to the state party by March 1) and two unpledged add-on delegates that will be selected at the state convention

Halifax, Pittsylvania and Danville (Flipper - 2/8/2008 1:54:16 PM)
I didn't say Obama would win these jurisdictions I said he would pick up big chunks of votes based on thier sizeable black populations in order to pick up delegates in the 5th CD.

According to the census burea:

Halifax County - 37.5% Black
Pittsylvania County 23.4% Black
City of Danville - 45.6% Black

Other counties and cities with major black populations in the 5th CD:

Buckingham County - 37.3% Black
Charlotte County - 31.0% Black
Appomatox - 21.6% Black
Mecklenburg County - 37.6& Black
Brunswick County - 56.0% Black
Cumberland County - 34.1% Black
Henry County 22.4% Black
Lunenberg County - 37.5% Black
Prince Edward County - 35.7% Black
Martinsville City - 41.9% Black

Albemarle and Charlottesville have a black population of just under 10% but Obama will win both of these localities by big margins.

There are only seven counties remaining in the 5th CD with black populations well under 20%.

If Obama gets a big turnout in counties with large black populations and a large chunk of white voters vote in the Republican primary choose to vote in the Republican primary, which they probably will, Obama could be competitive here.  A 2-2 delegate split here for Obama would be a win.

MARTINSVILLE, VA - The Obama campaign will hold town hall events with former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus tomorrow in Axton, Danville and Lynchburg. During his tenure as governor, Mabus passed one of the most comprehensive education reform programs in America, gave teachers the largest pay raise in the nation, and was named one of the top 10 education governors in the country by Fortune magazine. Roanoke event cancelled due to high winds (Lowell - 2/10/2008 9:26:45 PM)
Roanoke "Stand for Change" Town Hall Canceled

ROANOKE, VA - U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's Monday morning town hall in Roanoke has been canceled because high winds have prevented his plane from landing in the area.

Bummer, but man is it windy...gusts as high as 45 miles per hour tonight.

If he can't land in a little wind (aznew - 2/10/2008 9:34:04 PM)
how is he going to stand up to al Qaeda?

What makes you think its his decision? (Glant - 2/10/2008 10:12:59 PM)
Its much more likely with winds that high that the airport was shut down.

I wasn't being serious (aznew - 2/10/2008 10:24:55 PM)
