Polls are closing now in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Did I miss any?

UPDATE 8:02 pm: NBC projects Obama wins IL, Clinton wins OK.  On the GOP side, Romney projected to win MA, McCain projected to win CT, IL, NJ.

UPDATE 8:15 pm : Exit poll highlights from CNN indicate that Obama won men (57%) and women (52%) in AL. In CT, the exit polls have Obama winning men (56%-38%) but losing women (52%-45%). In NJ, Obama won men (51%-46%) but lost women (52%-46%) according to the exit polls. In MA, Obama won men (58%-37%) but lost women (56%-41%) according to the exit polls.  In MO, Obama won men (47%-44%) but lost women (50%-44%). Sensing a pattern here?  Again, these are EXIT POLLS, not actual results.

UPDATE 8:16 pm: NPR just called Tennessee for Clinton.

UPDATE 8:30 pm: NPR just called Arkansas for Clinton and Huckabee.

UPDATE 8:31 pm BY ROB:  An Obama insider in Mass just let me know that they are seeing very good numbers out of the Harvard and MIT districts as expected, but good news out of Brookline (which was an unknown) as it is trending Obama.  However, I've been told it's still "early," so hold on tight ....

UPDATE 8:35 pm: Obama is leading in CT with 15% of the vote counted, 50%-48%.  Obama is leading Clinton 50%-45% in DE with 16% counted.  In MA, Clinton is leading 53%-45% with 5% reporting.  In AL, Obama is leading 71%-28% with 6% reporting.

UPDATE 8:54 pm: NPR projects Clinton as the winner in MA.

UPDATE 9:02 pm: NBC projects Obama as the winner in DE and Clinton in NY.

Hillary Won OK: PSYCHE!!!! (The Grey Havens - 2/5/2008 9:15:35 PM)
MSNBC JUST RETRACTED THEIR PROJECTION!!!

They're now rating it too close to call!

oof... they're projecting it again (The Grey Havens - 2/5/2008 9:32:20 PM)
Exit polls suck.

any projections on distribution by gender (teacherken - 2/5/2008 9:25:38 PM)
to estrapolate the results?

looking at that

AL for OBama, maybe CT, but does not look good for  NJ or MO, and MA possibly too close to call.   Dems usually have more women voting than men.

Yeah, more women than men (Lowell - 2/5/2008 9:28:39 PM)
in pretty much every state.

Huck-a-bee!!!! (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:28:59 PM)
I'm still hoping McCain isn't the nominee.  He's going to be the most trouble for us.

I'm no expert on brokered conventions - but I think it would be great if Romney and Huckabee get enough delegates to be a problem for McCain.  I think Obama can beat either of them.  Not so confident about a race against McCain.  In fact, I just don't think he can do it unless conservative Republicans don't show up to vote for him.

McCain and Huckabee have cut a deal... (The Grey Havens - 2/5/2008 9:33:08 PM)
Huckabee is already onboard with McCain.

I can't imagine why (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:35:30 PM)
From a political perspective, Huckabee is closer to Romney - given that they are both staunch conservatives and McCain is not.

Huckabee is closer to McCain (Hugo Estrada - 2/5/2008 10:28:12 PM)
Romney doesn't have a conservative record, and that would drive crazy a true conservative as Huckabee.

Besides, McCain IS a staunch conservative. He may play a maverick on TV, but he doesn't play one in the Senate.

McCain is pretty conservative, and if he had been active in the 1950s or 1960s, no one would even noticed him.

He stands out because the Republican Party became sovietized; it became a party where no one was ever supposed to disagree with the central party doctrine. As much as some may have wished, there was no gulag to send dissenters, but they did the best next thing which was deny funds to run on election day.

So the natural disagreements that one would expect in a national party were erased, except for a few Republicans. These became "moderates" or "mavericks" for speaking out their mind publicly. In the privacy of Capitol Hill, they would vote otherwise, of course, but the sin of dissent was not easily forgotten.

That said, McCain did show a lot of character by publicly dissenting, and in some cases he actually sponsored legislation that went against the desires of the GOP elite.

But McCain is pretty conservative. We should keep that in mind.

A deal has been cut... (TurnPWBlue - 2/5/2008 9:37:01 PM)
McCain's supporters in West Virginia shifted to Huckabee after the first round of the caucus when it became clear McCain was a distant third and Romney was winning.

What about Georgia (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:39:13 PM)
That was McCain shifting votes to Huckabee because he didn't want Romney getting West Virginia.  That wasn't a long-term alliance.  It was a temporary fix to a problem in a second round in the CAUCUS.

You can't think of the caucus states the same way you think of primaries.

Very True... (TurnPWBlue - 2/6/2008 1:14:02 AM)
Also, the bigger news may be Ron Paul getting the Huckabee camp to pledge three of their delegates to Ron Paul in exchange for Paul's vote on the second ballot.

Clinton "murdered" in Alabama (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:37:03 PM)
Early results, but that is a huge loss if the numbers stand.

based on exits? (Rob - 2/5/2008 9:37:38 PM)

71% to 28% with 6% of the votes in (CNN) (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:41:12 PM)

Oddly, not called for him yet (aznew - 2/5/2008 9:39:21 PM)

Northern Alabama (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:43:11 PM)
That is probably why.  The Huntsville area is polar opposite the rest of the state.  Somewhat so for Birmingham - though I suspect BHam will go strongly for Obama.

I have lived in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.  I am very familiar with these three states.

Heavy black population in Bham - heavy white in Huntsville (relawson - 2/5/2008 9:45:14 PM)
It will be interesting to see how Obama does with the white population in Northern Alabama.  Hopefully as well as he did in Iowa ;-)

Artur Davis is congressman up there. He is with Obama (WillieStark - 2/5/2008 10:10:29 PM)

Not a bad web site for tracking results (aznew - 2/5/2008 9:37:35 PM)

Bill Richardson grew a beard! (aznew - 2/5/2008 9:48:43 PM)
He's coming up on MSNBC soon.

Might give some insight on the SW

Fox calls Mass. for Clinton (aznew - 2/5/2008 9:53:42 PM)
Musta been all those Kennedy endorsements.

Institutional Dems (Evan M - 2/5/2008 10:04:39 PM)
Mass is a land of reflexive, institutional Dems. Clinton's win there is not a surprise. It would have taken Kennedy coming forward after Iowa to effect change there.

Sorry, Evan, but you'll forgive me (aznew - 2/5/2008 10:09:05 PM)
if I concluded that the Kennedy endorsements were the most significant since that of Saul of Taurus. :)

Of Course (Evan M - 2/5/2008 10:17:32 PM)
No problem. I grew up in NH, so I was confused when we moved and Presidential hopefuls didn't come to my elementary school every four years.

Learned a lot about Mass politics. It's fascinating the way the national media paints Mass as "Kennedy, Kerry and Republican Governors" when it is a lot more murky than that.

Kinda like the way people are surprised when Virginia elects Democrats. :)

question in MA is delegates (teacherken - 2/5/2008 9:56:42 PM)
Clinton had a big turnout in W MA,   Obama in college towns

what kind of margin in delegates will either one have?

CNN said Clinton had the advantage there (aznew - 2/5/2008 9:59:39 PM)
because Obama's popular vote totals were getting run up in the Eastern part of the state.

I have no knowledge one way or the other -- just reporting what they said.

Virginia and California Stand on their Own- to Obama Hell No We Wont Go (J. Rae - 2/7/2008 4:58:21 AM)
After viewing the California results a few things are factually accurate. Hillary is getting the majority Latino, Women and Asian votes and she is getting them for a reason. This trend is continuing through the country.

Obama has never done anything for the Latino community, but suddenly shows up and assumes he can gain their trust it does not work that way. Most supporting Obama who are not African American are the established liberal elites, not the working class liberal, conservative or centrist democrats. His campaign has taken various sexist spins and overtones, which are contained within the spin he and his followers have prevailed at pontificating in the bias media.

After the dust of poetic dust and rhetoric has settled, after the masses of non registered student voters are counted, or not- After asking numerous of his supporters why they like him and hearing endlessly, he speaks so beautifully and Oprah likes him and Ted Kennedy endorsed him, The voters in California saw through the empty content of his beautiful rhetoric. Kennedy's endorsement did not even carry weight in his own state Hillary won Massachusetts. California told Oprah no maam you don't rule here. This is the west, this is CALIFORNIA we do it our way!

Thank You California. With Obamas extensive record of a whole three years in the Congress and a member of the Ted Kennedy Elite Good Old Boys club of Washington, which Obama is now the newest member of, Californian's said "Hell no we wont go there" Send Oprah and her Book club back to Chicago, which has one of the worst education systems in the nation. Tell Maria to go home to Arnie and We don't give adman who Endorses Obama, "Californians said Hell no we wont go" Tha Latino Community knows Hillary and Bill have stood by them. We all know Hillary's triumphs and errors but far more triumphs for the people and children in America in her 35 year legacy. Then there are the sexist comments of course. This country is so far behind the gender lines of world leaders it's sickening.

Women in this nation did not even receive the right to vote until 1920. The working people of America Know Hillary Like Edwards care about them and have the experience to bring hope with content and a TRUE CHANGE for the better. To heal this nation and the world, takes far more experience than simply chanting like a hollow mantra " yes we can" Well in the Hillary camp the chant is much stronger.

"YES WE WILL" and as Tom Petty said " We wont back down"

Virginia has always been a state, which calls its own shots, much like California. Virginia will not bow down to hollow rhetoric and beautiful oration. Not all Liberals buy into this lets hand McCain the General election, buy making Obama the nominee movement.

People are not looking at the facts of Obama's life and voting record (100 present votes) and lack of experience in every area. It's the liberals like myself, but those who have lost their mind, in their reactionary mode to the BUSH nightmare who are supporting Obama the people making over 75,000 a year....thats Obama's crowd with the exception of various income brackets of African American voters.

Obama cannot negotiate with world leaders he has NO international relations experience. Virginia like California is not going to by into the empty poetics and lack of experience of Obama. Hillary is the nations great hope-
