In 2004, campaigns started using text messaging to rally voters and increase turnout. The impact of text messaging on electoral turnout has already been observed, for example, it was instrumental in the Spanish elections of 2004. Text messaging is a proven method for increasing turnout among young voters especially.

Which brings us to your task for today.
Here in Virginia, we don't vote until next Tuesday. But just about everyone in Virginia knows people in other states, and with 22 states voting in a Democratic primary or caucus today, chances are you know someone who could vote today. Just look at the states voting today.

Your job today is to send a test message to people you know in those twenty-two states with a primary or caucus today. Remind them to vote.

If you like, you can copy the one I am sending:

And please vote today!

AIM makes it even easier, with so many people sending their AIM incoming messages to their phones. Just copy the text above into your IM client, and blast away.

Sending a text message is fast and easy, and can really make a difference. If you take no other action in 2008 than sending a single text message to everyone in your phone today and on election day in November, you will have had a larger impact on the election than direct mail.

And at the end of the day, elections matter a lot more than telephone calls to your Senators, though both are important, because a timely text message may alter the make-up of our Government.

So get texting today. It is quite literally the least you can do.
