This is the first time the L.A. Times has endorsed a presidential candidate sine 1972.  This is a big one!

UPDATE BY ROB: In fact, with the L.A. Times and Oakland Tribune endorsements today, Obama wracked up the support of 28 California papers.  Here's a great DK diary on this amazing sweep.

Grateful Dead Members to Reunite for Barack Obama

(San Francisco) Members of the Grateful Dead will host a get out the vote concert in support of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama on Monday, February 4th at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.

Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir, joined by Jackie Greene, John Molo, and Steve Molitz, will play show together in support of Barack Obama.

The video website Iclips will be producing a live simulcast streamed via the Internet on www.iclips.net at approximately 7:30pm PST.

This will mark the first time that the members of the legendary band have performed together since 2004. They have agreed to reunite for this one-time-only event in order to lend support to Senator Obama leading into the crucial "Super- Tuesday" series of primaries held on Tuesday, February 5th.

No worries! (FishHead Dem - 2/1/2008 10:44:34 PM)
Should be lots of fun!!!

Hope they can all vote!

Surprised (DanG - 2/2/2008 2:43:03 AM)
I'm genuinely surprised.  Was sure they would endorse Clinton.  But I'm still of the opinion that newspaper endorsements will be ignored by most people.

What's more important to note is that the GOP Primary in California is closed, meaning that Independents cannot vote in it.  That means they all either vote Democratic, or don't vote at all.  Which probably helps Obama.

Albuquerque Tribune Endorses Obama! (Lowell - 2/2/2008 9:37:52 AM)
Yet another major newspaper endorsement for Barack Obama:

Some will find a reason not to vote for Obama. He is too young, too inexperienced. Too liberal. Too conservative. Too black. Too white. Too soft. Too religious. Too secular. Too naive. Too full of himself.

But we see in him a vibrant American leader who understands that leadership begins first and foremost with the people and a respect for - not manipulation of - them.

Obama seeks to leapfrog Washington's harsh political rhetoric and gridlock for all the right reasons. While some might ask why him, why now, we ask: Why not?

We enthusiastically endorse the presidential aspirations of Obama as the candidate in the New Mexico Democratic caucus most capable and willing to lead this country by challenging each and every one of its citizens to do what needs doing - achieve the American dream, rooted in those famous words: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Gobama!

La opción demócrata es Barack Obama (Lowell - 2/2/2008 9:55:57 AM)

English version:

We need a leader today that can inspire and unite America again around its greatest possibilities. Barack Obama is the right leader for the time. We know that he is not as well known among our community and while he has the support of Maria Elena Durazo, Senator Gil Cedillo and others he comes to the Latino community with less name recognition. Nevertheless, it is Obama who deserves our support.

By deciding between a woman or an African American as their presidencial nominee, the Democrats are making history. Barack Obama has the sensibilities of a man from humble beginnings raised in a multicultural home. He is the best option for a truly visionary change.

Great endorsement in either language!

If you go to RCP and look at the polls, almost every one of them shows the race getting much tighter.

Tightening Polls (soccerdem - 2/2/2008 3:29:35 PM)
A quick Google showed Dan G correct, especially in Colorado.  But this stuff changes quickly.  Yet, things (sadly for me) looking positive for the potential SECOND black president.

Also, apropos of nothing, wonder why use the quote: "Duty is the sublimest word in our language.  Do your duty in all things.  You cannot do more.  You should never do less."  That quote was used in VERY slightly different wording by Adolph Eichmann, Herman Goering, Joseph Goebbels (sp.?), and Heinrich Himmler, good patriots all.

Wow (DanG - 2/2/2008 3:36:44 PM)
Did you just compare me to a Nazi?

DanG (soccerdem - 2/2/2008 4:43:12 PM)
No, emphatically not.  Cannot you see I was showing the Rob E Lee quote to be the excuse of war criminals for their acts.  Something like: "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."  Don't be sensitive--we agree way more than we disagree.  The only people I would ever call Nazis are Nazis (or some Republicans).
