Super Bowl Predictions

The Super Bowl of primaries is going to be played on Tuesday, but before that the Super Bowl of Football fame will be played on Sunday.  This is an open thread to discuss, and more importantly, put your reputation on the line with a prediction.  The closest one to the actual final score wins, um, hmmm...  not much to give away around here...  heck, wins bragging rights.

I predict... (MikeSizemore - 2/1/2008 1:36:04 PM)
The Hokies will defeat Uva tomorrow night for the 2nd time this season!

That is pretty much all that matters (WillieStark - 2/3/2008 3:12:14 PM)

Brooms were out (MikeSizemore - 2/3/2008 5:32:57 PM)
And the sweep was on!

Patriots (Eric - 2/1/2008 1:37:15 PM)
I've got nothing against the Pats.  But I like the idea of the vaunted parity the NFL supposedly has...  meaning I'm sick of the Pats winning everything.  While I'm no Giants fan, I'd really rather see them win, if for no other reason that it's something different.

But I simply can't pick the G-men to win.  The Pats have been too good all season and they come up strong on offense when they need it most.

So, it won't be a blow out although the score will look worse than it was because the Pats will score a few garbage points toward the end to assure victory...

Patriots 34  Giants 17

Patriots will win (Catzmaw - 2/1/2008 1:57:32 PM)
I'm a lifelong Redskins fan, but my mother's ties to Massachusetts have always caused me to root for the Pats when the Skins are out of the mix.  Normally I'm a big champion of the underdog and could seriously have considered rooting for the Packers, just because I like Brett Favre; however, the Packers' loss ruined for me what I thought would be one of the greatest QB matchups ever in football.

My prediction:  Patriots 31 to Giants 20 (I'm assuming Burress will be healthy for this one).

Prediction (TheGreenMiles - 2/1/2008 2:09:59 PM)
Pats 139, Giants -2.

If Belichick played against the Giants by himself, it would still be Pats 56, Giants 13.

Wow. That prediction was almost as good as the NH polls (TurnPWBlue - 2/3/2008 11:29:56 PM)
Next thing you know there will be a slew of posts calling for NFL fraud investigations...

Obama!!! (Adam Malle - 2/1/2008 2:14:52 PM)
Ohhh wait Patriots

Giants Win (yankeefan - 2/1/2008 2:21:02 PM)
Giants 24
Pats   20

Cheaters Never Win ************

That's funny coming from a screen name (Catzmaw - 2/1/2008 4:04:34 PM)
touting a team with more names involved in the steroid scandal than any other.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! (DanG - 2/1/2008 4:34:46 PM)
Yankees suck!  Yankees suck!  Yankees suck!

Go Orioles!

If the Patriots Win... (HisRoc - 2/1/2008 3:32:21 PM)
Their Perfect Season* will have a Barry Bonds asterick.

I'm going to go with Plaxico Burress:  Giants 23-17.

How's that? (Catzmaw - 2/1/2008 4:08:07 PM)
The whole videotape scandal happened and was finished before the first down was played in a regular season game, and it was never that huge to begin with. After all, all teams spend time trying to figure out each others' signals.  They watch each other and try to get information about their opponents' plays any way they can, including pumping newly acquired players for information.  Belichek's mistake was in taping everything.  Seems it's okay if you're just watching them and writing down what you observe in a book.  Go figure.

Cheating Is Cheating (HisRoc - 2/1/2008 4:29:25 PM)
Catzmaw,
Saying that videotaping the other team's signals is not much worse than just watching them is like saying that armed robbery is not much different from shoplifting.  They're pretty much the same, except for that gun thing.  :)  That's why the NFL bans videotaping.

BTW, did you read the interviews with the Philadephia Eagles players who talked about how surprised they were after halftime in Superbowl XXXIX with how well the Patriots offense had adjusted to their defensive calls in the first half?  Makes you wonder if the Jets game this year was the first time they had pulled that stunt.

Not buying it (Catzmaw - 2/1/2008 7:44:07 PM)
Every single team in the NFL immediately changed all its signals when the scandal broke and the Pats still ran over them.  I haven't read the Eagles interviews, but what they're suggesting seems to be that the Pats figured out during a 15 minute half-time how to read their signals - presumably taped in the first half??? - and managed to educate the entire offense within that 15 minutes to the point where the Eagles lost the game because the Pats adjusted.  Well, it couldn't be just because Brady really is a great QB now, could it?

That's Not How It Works (HisRoc - 2/1/2008 7:58:10 PM)
But lets not argue about it because we do agree on one thing:  Tom Brady is a great QB.  It's just too bad that he plays for a team that cheats.

Okay, enough arguing over politics and sports.  Let meet over on the new diary about Progressive Christians and argue about religion.

:)

Let the team without sin cast the first stone (TheGreenMiles - 2/2/2008 1:44:02 PM)
Every team does what it can to get an edge. That's why Ravens coach Brian Billick called out Jets coach Eric Mangini for turning in the Patriots for videotaping.

My favorite moment of the whole thing came when Steve Young squared off with Bill Parcells on ESPN (I'm paraphrasing here):

YOUNG: This is a disgrace. The Patriots should be ashamed of themselves.

PARCELLS: Steve, what about when we used to play your 49ers at Candlestick and our headsets would go in and out the whole game?

YOUNG: Oh, well, that's just gamesmanship.

PARCELLS: (doesn't say anything, just gives Young the "oh my god you're such a douche" face)

High-fiving TheGreenMiles ;)

Ah, The Barry Bonds Defense (HisRoc - 2/2/2008 3:35:45 PM)
"Everybody does it."  Sorry, but 'everybody' isn't attempting to set an NFL record.

Pats Cheated (WillieStark - 2/3/2008 3:14:16 PM)
I think that tarnishes their record this year. And if they win, I hope that is inserted into every story about the win.

Go Giants! (TurnPWBlue - 2/1/2008 4:05:39 PM)
Giants 35
Patriots 31

At a minimum, the Giants will cover the spread.

rooting for the giants (bcat - 2/2/2008 3:04:36 PM)
I don't think they'll actually win, but man. I'll be sending out a prayer to the patron saint of delicious irony in professional sports. (Saint Sebastian, btw.)

Giants 31
Pats 28

I love it (TheGreenMiles - 2/1/2008 4:18:34 PM)
Lots of predictions of the Giants winning when there's no money on the line. Everyone loves an underdog! Unfortunately this ain't the movies and the bad guys are going 19-0. Here's the real poll question -- how many touchdowns will Brady throw: 5, 6, or 7?

This game will be a rout (aznew - 2/1/2008 4:53:19 PM)
The Patriots are probably the best team in the history of the NFL. The Giants are a mediocre team whose very inconsistent QB hit a hot streak at the right time. That was enough against the Packers, but it won't be against NE.

And for the record, I'm a Skins fan.

Right - score will be (aznew - 2/1/2008 5:03:14 PM)
Pats 54 Giants 14

Pats (Chris Guy - 2/1/2008 4:54:33 PM)
45-21

the pat are republicans (pvogel - 2/1/2008 5:03:05 PM)
 the Giants are sad
Football is football

The I-Told-You-So's Are Going to Fly Next Monday (HisRoc - 2/1/2008 5:52:29 PM)
Eric,

This is one of the more entertaining diaries lately.

I'm not concerned (JohnBruhns - 2/2/2008 1:20:49 PM)
I'm a ridiculous Eagles fan, so I don't have a preference for any team in the NFC, especially New York or Dallas.  I am warm to the Skins being the NOVA and DC were my adopted homes for a couple years.  But the Patriots have the momentum, multiple weapons, the best offensive line in the league -- not to mention the combo of Brady and Moss ... they're just unstoppable.  But upsets happen on any given Sunday.  Right now I'm just looking to next season , but will be tuning in tomorrow for the big game.

I meant to say NFC EAST (JohnBruhns - 2/2/2008 1:21:44 PM)

Strongest Team Not in Super Bowl (soccerdem - 2/2/2008 3:08:20 PM)
At the completion of the 07 season, the strongest team in the NFL was the Miami Dolphins: They had to hold up the rest of the league in the standings.

Final Scores:  Pats: 38

Glad to see (legacyofmarshall - 2/3/2008 11:19:16 AM)
That tensions tend to run higher between Patriots and Giants fans than between Obama and Clinton fans.

By any means, Pats win:

NE: 31
NY: 24

Rooting for the Giants, but: (Barbara - 2/3/2008 1:27:32 PM)
Patriots 38
Giants 14

More importantly:  Art Monk in the Hall O Fame!!  Yeah!!!

And, Darrell Green! (HisRoc - 2/3/2008 2:05:51 PM)

And Andre Tippett! (TheGreenMiles - 2/3/2008 2:10:38 PM)
A shining star (on and off the field) through many dark days for the Patriots (on and off the field).

I predict (Lowell - 2/3/2008 6:42:36 PM)
that you might see this Obama Super Bowl ad this evening! :)

Impressive... (Eric - 2/3/2008 6:52:13 PM)
So who is Obama rooting for?  :-)

Well, the Bears are gone (DanG - 2/3/2008 6:57:03 PM)
But I bet Hillary would love to see the Giants win.  And he's been endorsed by all three Statewide figures in Mass.  So I bet he's a Patriot today.

Running that one ad in the Superbowl (DanG - 2/3/2008 6:57:26 PM)
Will cost nearly $3 million.

It's not running nationally (Lowell - 2/3/2008 7:03:18 PM)
but in selected markets.

Damn (DanG - 2/4/2008 12:05:03 AM)
Was waiting for it all night.  Oh well.

Crap (TheGreenMiles - 2/3/2008 11:12:32 PM)
Watching that game was like torture. Get it, WillieStark and VaBlogger2? Haw haw!

Coughlin deserves it. Oh well, I'll have to watch our past three Super Bowl DVDs and party like it's 2002/2004/2006.

I Believe That I Won The Bragging Rights (HisRoc - 2/4/2008 12:20:17 AM)
If the Patriots Win... (0.00 / 0)
Their Perfect Season* will have a Barry Bonds asterick.
I'm going to go with Plaxico Burress:  Giants 23-17.

With the Giants winning 17-14, I'm closest.

Nan-nah, nah-nah-nah!

Oh yeah!?? (Catzmaw - 2/4/2008 1:50:10 PM)
Oh yeah!? ... well, so what?  I don't even LIKE football ... and no one can spell that Umena ... Umenu ... that guy's name - so there! :p
