NY NOW: Ted Kennedy is Sexist

I myself have been accused of being anti-woman simply because I support Obama, and not Clinton, for President. Forget the fact that that even some self-described feminists are becoming increasingly ambivalent about her candidacy.

Now, according to the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women, any white male that doesn't support Hillary is also anti-woman, including Sen. Edward Kennedy:

(h/t AMERICAblog)

Women have just experienced the ultimate betrayal. Senator Kennedy's endorsement of Hillary Clinton's opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard. Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few. Women have buried their anger that his support for the compromises in No Child Left Behind and the Medicare bogus drug benefit brought us the passage of these flawed bills. We have thanked him for his ardent support of many civil rights bills, BUT women are always waiting in the wings.

And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He's picked the new guy over us. He's joined the list of progressive white men who can't or won't handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not "this" one). "They" are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That's Howard's brother) who run DFA (that's the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). They are Alternet, Progressive Democrats of America, democrats.com, Kucinich lovers and all the other groups that take women's money, say they'll do feminist and women's rights issues one of these days, and conveniently forget to mention women and children when they talk about poverty or human needs or America's future or whatever.

This latest move by Kennedy, is so telling about the status of and respect for women's rights, women's voices, women's equality, women's authority and our ability - indeed, our obligation - to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a President that is the first woman after centuries of men who "know what's best for us."

John Aravosis at AMERICAblog pretty much says it all:

Never have I read a whinier, more sophomoric press release from a national organization, or in this case, their rather important state affiliate. Apparently, anyone who supports any Democrat other than Hillary is a misogynist. So does that also mean that anyone who supports any Democrat other than Obama is a racist? Truly one of the most ridiculous, knee-jerk, stuck-in-the-1960s, and downright offensive things I've ever seen from what I thought was a respectable organization.

But that's just the NY chapter of NOW. Here's the NOW President's official statement on the endorsement:

The National Organization for Women has enormous respect and admiration for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D- Mass.). For decades Sen. Kennedy has been a friend of NOW, and a leader and fighter for women's civil and reproductive rights, and his record shows that.

Though the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has proudly endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, we respect Sen. Kennedy's endorsement. We continue to encourage women everywhere to express their opinions and exercise their right to vote.

Utterly bonkers. (Lowell - 1/28/2008 11:15:30 PM)
What, is Caroline Kennedy sexist too?  Unbelievable...who ARE these people?!?

This is disgusting (DanG - 1/28/2008 11:28:21 PM)
Partisan Politics at its worst.

Barack Has Plenty Of Support From Women (Lee Diamond - 1/28/2008 11:35:40 PM)
Barack Obama has a lot of support from women. I was at the rally today.  There were a lot of women there.  The New Yorkers are just practicing parochial politics in the most extreme form.

Fired Up.  Ready To Go.

according to them, "white men" are the problem (Chris Guy - 1/28/2008 11:43:26 PM)
did someone say race-baiting?

This is why (spotter - 1/30/2008 8:22:33 AM)
I don't belong to NOW.

Women have brains.  They can determine who is the best candidate, male or female, and vote for him or her based on individual merits.

NOW should stop underestimating and patronizing women.  NOW should stop insulting men.  Some NOW members are a lot more sexist than the average guy.  They judge a candidate only by gender.  Like that candidate and her husband, they foolishly attempt to win by scorched earth tactics.  It will backfire.

Someone should ask that supposed feminist Hillary Clinton, who found the time to tearfully answer the questions "How do you do it?  Who does your hair?" whether or not she agrees with the sexist tripe emanating from NOW.

By the way (spotter - 1/30/2008 9:59:09 AM)
I recently saw an interviewer ask Hillary Clinton what was her biggest mistake.  She responded "well, I didn't know a lot about fashion back then (little laugh)," and launched into a discussion of clothing and hairstyles.

Umm, Hillary, girlfriend, how about the Iraq war (little laugh)?

Talk about the ultimate betrayal.
