Mock 2008 Democratic Convention at Washington & Lee

I spent a large part of today at the 2008 Washington and Lee Mock Convention. For those who are unfamiliar (I know I only found out a couple days ago), since 1908 every 4 years the students at W&L hold a mock national convention for the party out of the White House (so this year was the Democratic National Convention). They have correctly predicted the eventual nominee in 18/23 of the the contests!!!

I was very impressed with how serious the students take the convention. The room that it was held in was a nearly identical replica of what you would expect at a national convention (albeight on a smaller scale). I unfortunately missed Governor Kaine's opening remarks (though I'm told they were very good), but made it for a number of incredible speakers: Delaware AG Beau Biden, Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, Congressman Charlie Wilson, Senator Max Cleland, Jesse Jackson, Senator Carol Moseley Braun, and Governor Doug Wilder.

Tomorrow will feature Senator Jim Webb (woot!), Congressman Harold Ford, Governor Joe Manchin (WV), and most importantly- the nomination of a presidential candidate.

I will be posting some video highlights and photos tomorrow afternoon- So stay tuned!!!

Great job James! (Chris Guy - 1/26/2008 1:21:29 AM)
I know, I know... I said I was going as of a few days ago, but then life happened. I can't wait to see your upadates... :)

Bad news for Obama? (Eric - 1/27/2008 11:25:41 AM)
I saw in the paper today that Hillary won fairly handily.  Given the Mock Convention track record, is that a bad sign for Obama?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing the details later.

I think (Lowell - 1/27/2008 11:36:07 AM)
there's a little more important news this weekend for Obama, like the SC rout of Hillary Clinton, the amazing Caroline Kennedy endorsement (and passing of the torch from JFK to Obama), the strong endorsements by several major newspapers (Philadelphia Inquirer, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times), etc., etc.

Let's put it this way (Lowell - 1/27/2008 11:58:35 AM)
I'd LOVE to see the results of the "mock convention" if it were held today! :)

Yeah, I'm not saying (Eric - 1/27/2008 12:06:04 PM)
it is (or is not) a problem for Obama.  Just an interesting result - especially given how well Obama has done the past week.  That's why I'm looking forward to the details - maybe James will have some good insight as to why/how they ended up where they did.
