Michelle Obama on the Clintons' "win-at-all-costs tactics"

Michelle Obama hits back...good for her!

In the past week or two, another candidate's spouse has been getting an awful lot of attention.

We knew getting into this race that Barack would be competing with Senator Clinton and President Clinton at the same time.

We expected that Bill Clinton would tout his record from the nineties and talk about Hillary's role in his past success. That's a fair approach and a challenge we are prepared to face.

What we didn't expect, at least not from our fellow Democrats, are the win-at-all-costs tactics we've seen recently. We didn't expect misleading accusations that willfully distort Barack's record.

Barack Obama isn't relying on a former President of the United States to campaign for him.

He's relying on us -- you, me, and hundreds of thousands of people like us who are giving whatever they can afford to support this movement.

Please stand up in the face of these new attacks. Make your first online donation of $50 today and own a piece of this campaign:

Barack's unwavering opposition to the war in Iraq, his outspoken support of women's rights, and his call for leadership that will transform our party and our country have all been mischaracterized in the past two weeks.

We've seen disingenuous attacks and smear tactics turn people off from the political process for too long, and enough is enough.

It's time for a change. It's time for a new kind of leadership and a new kind of politics in our party and in our country.

And while Senator Clinton has a former president in her corner, I'll put my faith in a movement of a whole lot of people who are ready for change.

South Carolina votes in 48 hours, and more than 20 states will make their voices heard in less than two weeks on February 5th. Now is the time for all of us to step up and take personal responsibility for making change happen.

Thank you,

Michelle

What? (TheGreenMiles - 1/24/2008 3:53:39 PM)
Misleading accusations? In a political campaign? I'm shocked and chagrined. SHOCKED AND CHAGRINED!

The Obama campaign's truth squad idea is the best thing it's done in a week. Emails from your wife complaining another candidate is being mean? Not going to get you anywhere. Catch Clinton on videotape in a bald-faced lie and turn it around within 24 hours on YouTube? Now you're talking.

It's a compare and contrast moment (True Blue - 1/24/2008 5:47:48 PM)

Who would rather have as First Lady?  Michelle Obama or Bill Clinton?

You mean First Laddy? :) (TheGreenMiles - 1/24/2008 6:40:11 PM)

Who'da thought! (Rebecca - 1/24/2008 4:06:12 PM)
I'm shocked that people are accusing Bill Clinton of lying in public, just shocked! What in his background would lead anyone to think he would be capable of such a thing?

Barack- COME OUT FROM BEHIND YOUR WIFE'S SKIRT AND DEFEND YOURSELF (Ben - 1/24/2008 5:38:06 PM)
n/t

And Hillary, start running your OWN campaign (Lowell - 1/24/2008 5:39:28 PM)
Not Bill Part Deux.

Also, consider that (Lowell - 1/24/2008 5:42:11 PM)
"Bill Clinton is hurting the Democratic Party."

And yes, I've heard this from numerous people outside the blogs, NOT all Obama supporters, who are livid at what Bill Clinton's been doing and also very worried about the long-term immpact on the Democratic Party.

I've specifically heard from NUMEROUS people (Lowell - 1/24/2008 5:50:08 PM)
NOT just Obama supporters, that if Hillary gets the Democratic nomination and McCain gets the Republican nomination, we're in big trouble.  I hope they're wrong, but I'm hearing this with  increasing frequency AND intensity.  Some Democrats -- I'm talking about good, loyal Democrats here -- are saying they won't vote for Hillary.  Others are saying "I'll hold my nose and vote for Hillary, but I won't do anything more than that."  Finally, not that this is big news or anything, but I'm also hearing that African Americans are really getting pissed at Bill Clinton.

Poor Barack... (SaveElmer - 1/24/2008 6:20:54 PM)
People are being mean to him...

The "victim" act isn't gonna work against Republicans...in the unlikely event he gets the nod...

And particularly when his hypocrisy is so transparent. Obama has been distorting Hillary's record for months now...

But here at RaisingObama we don't hear too much about that...

Please enlighten me... (Doug in Mount Vernon - 1/24/2008 7:34:36 PM)
Exactly what has Obama done or said that is a distortion of Clinton's record?  Specifics, please.

I would not have made the claim against Clinton under just a week or two ago.  If you think that what the Clintons are doing is honorable campaigning, or OK to do (especially to a fellow Democrat) then I truly feel sorry for you.

Distorting and misrepresenting other candidates opinions is NOT ethical.

Please, enlighten me as to how Barack has been doing this to Hillary and I will stand corrected.

The reply below got put in the wrong place... (SaveElmer - 1/24/2008 6:21:49 PM)
Meant to respond to main article...

Works both ways... (SaveElmer - 1/24/2008 6:24:24 PM)
I have talked to numerous people who will not vote for Obama or Edwards in the general except under the most dire circumstances....I am one of them...

Obama began this spiral into negative campaign tactics a couple months ago when his unity theme wasn't working for him...

I didn't say I agreed with these people (Lowell - 1/24/2008 6:35:07 PM)
I think any Democrat who would not vote for the nominee, with so much at stake, is a fool. If Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, not only will I vote for her, I'll work hard to elect her.  I certainly would NEVER say what you have said, that you won't vote for Edwards or Obama.  Blech.

so which GOP'er would you vote for over either of them (Sui Juris - 1/24/2008 7:00:20 PM)
in the general?

Do tell.

As I said... (SaveElmer - 1/24/2008 7:49:34 PM)
Except under dire circumstances...

I would not allow my vote to aid the Republican candidate..if however Virginia was not close, or if there were a viable third party candidate running whose views were largely in line with mine and had a chance...I would look very seriously at voting for them...

If however polls were close here I would vote against the Republican candidate in the most effective way I could to insure their defeat...my vote would not be for Obama or Edwards but simply to insure no Republican victory...

Lowell, if you listen to talk radio (aznew - 1/24/2008 6:27:07 PM)
you will hear that a lot of Republicans will be staying home if McCain get the nomination, so where does that leave us.

The races for nominations of both parties are in such a state of flux, I think polls or opinions of people, even done in good faith, trying to gauge the relative strength of candidates in a general election 10 months off are not very meaningful.

I find it hard to believe that many Republicans (Lowell - 1/24/2008 6:31:52 PM)
will stay home because McCain is the nominee.  Especially if Hillary Clinton, who they've spent a decade demonizing, is the Democratic nominee, I think they'll show up simply to defeat the "common enemy."  We'll see, but my thinking is that we're a lot smarter to go with Obama than Clinton in terms of electoral "strategery."

I'll do you one better (TheGreenMiles - 1/24/2008 6:42:42 PM)
I wouldn't be shocked to see a 3rd party candidate from the right if McCain was the nominee.

My point, exactly (aznew - 1/24/2008 7:04:21 PM)
Emotions are high. Permutations are many. Predictions are 'nigh impossible, and basing a strategy or a candidate choice on them is questionable, to me.

That all said, I hear what you are saying.

You have to wonder (Sui Juris - 1/24/2008 6:59:28 PM)
about the mindset behind a decision like this:

Some Democrats -- I'm talking about good, loyal Democrats here -- are saying they won't vote for Hillary.

I'm not Hillary's biggest fan (I'm an Edwards supporter who will probably end up rolling to Obama, and then voting for Hillary in the general), but good god amighty you'd have to be a moron to vote for any of the Republicans over her (or simply not cast your vote for her if she's the nominee, which would be the same thing (hello, Nader voters)).

Really, I can't take anyone seriously as a rational Democrat if they wouldn't vote for Hillary in the general.

I agree with you (Lowell - 1/24/2008 7:03:47 PM)
I'm just passing along what I'm hearing from many people.

Lowell (Gordie - 1/25/2008 12:43:25 AM)
I still think it will be Romney and after tonights debate it looks more and more like Romney.

So you can stop the bashing that Hillary can't beat McCain, cause he won't be around for the General.

Yes, indeed, Lowell (KathyinBlacksburg - 1/24/2008 7:29:04 PM)
n/t

Bill is hurting the party.

Gosh, I'm thrilled to see (Sui Juris - 1/24/2008 7:45:47 PM)
that Miles and Dems08 think that a childish and sexist call out deserves to be uprated.

Michelle Obama on the BOD of WalMart company - TreeHouse Foods (demdiva - 1/24/2008 5:47:44 PM)
I read this on a WaPo political fact-checker blog. This is confirmed by the Chicago Sun Times.

Web sites and Crain's Chicago Business have noted Michelle's June 2005 election to the board of directors of TreeHouse Foods -- a post that earned her $45,000 in 2005 and stock options that by the end of 2006, if claimed, would have reaped her $60,000.

"She got on the corporate board of someplace where she could make money, and make money quickly,'' said political consultant Joe Novak, who operates a Web site that has criticized Michelle's new TreeHouse role.
"She's cashing in because of her husband.''
Michelle was on the TreeHouse board in November 2005, when one of its divisions announced plans to close its pickle and relish plant in La Junta, Colo., displacing 150 "mainly Hispanic'' workers, Novak said.

How can Barry criticize HRC for serving on the WalMart BOD as the First Lady of Arkansas, when his wife is getting $60,000 from a Walmart subsidiary?  BTW, Hillary has recently criticized WalMart for it's labor practices -- which are apparently quite different from the time that she served on its BOD and she returned the $5000 donation from WalMart.  Has Barry returned the $168,000 in donations he's received from Resko, the federally-indicted Chicago real estate developer? The same Resko who helped the Obamas buy a large house in Chicago for $300,000 less than the fair market value?

If Barry didn't want to go down this road, then he should not have taken that first step when he was busy smearing Hillary back in Iowa.

"If Barry didn't want to go down this road, then he should not have taken that first step when he was busy smearing Hillary back in Iowa. " (SaveElmer - 1/24/2008 6:28:57 PM)
Exactly...

When Obama attacks he is simply illuminating the differences between the candidates...

When Hillary attacks...she is being negative and destroying the party

And (leftofcenter - 1/24/2008 7:23:14 PM)
I'm real sure that Treehouse Foods is a pro union and unionized company.

Huh huh. right. Do unions actually do any research before they endorse?????????????

Who the hell is Barry? (Doug in Mount Vernon - 1/24/2008 7:39:18 PM)
If you're referring to Barack, grow the hell up.

that's the name he went by ... (j_wyatt - 1/24/2008 7:44:43 PM)
for much of his life -- used by his grandparents and mother and childhood friends.

Some say Barack, fyi, is Hebrew or Old Testament in origin.  Several Israeli acquaintances have said it's not uncommon in Israel, with variant English spellings.

My, my, tempers are short around here.

I am Shocked (Gordie - 1/25/2008 12:35:42 AM)
"What we didn't expect, at least not from our fellow Democrats, are the win-at-all-costs tactics we've seen recently. We didn't expect misleading accusations that willfully distort Barack's record".

Are you sure you and "O" are ready for the WH?

Once again, Gordie misunderstands (DanG - 1/25/2008 1:48:43 AM)
We were expecting that from Republicans.  We weren't expecting that from Democrats.  Sorry for assuming that Billary had more compassion than Sweeney-damned-Todd.  The mistake will not be repeated.

Just Remember (Gordie - 1/25/2008 7:37:58 AM)
When it starts to fly about Treehouse Foods,

WHO BROUGHT IT UP FIRST ABOUT BEING ON THE BOARD OF WALMART.
