From the Perriello for Congress campaign...

Rocky Mount, VA-January 21, 2008-Today, Tom Perriello, Democratic congressional candidate for Virginia's Fifth District, honored the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He attended the annual Martin Luther King Breakfast of Franklin County and offered these remarks:

"Dr. King offered us not just a dream, but a clear path to the promised land of economic justice, peaceful foreign policy, and neighborly love for all of our brothers and sisters. We honor his legacy not with passive reflection, but rather with passionate work for justice and harmony in our community. Together, we can and must write the next chapter of King's march towards the beloved community he knew America could be."

"On that fateful day in Memphis, Dr. King was fighting for the basic fairness of sanitation workers. We continue his struggle by picking up the mantle of economic fairness at home and human rights abroad. We must live according to that prophetic principle that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

"I will work tirelessly to support a Fifth District that reflects this prophetic vision of justice and the common good. We must commit ourselves to being our brother's and sister's keeper, whether that fellow child of God is in Danville or Darfur. When we have counties with 35% poverty rates and 30% drop-out rates, we know the path to the promised land remains long. The legacy of Dr. King is that we must always sustain the faith that a more just world is an achievable dream, when we have the courage to make it so."

An Albemarle County native, Perriello has worked on security strategies in Afghanistan and Kosovo, prosecuted warlords in Sierra Leone, and developed alternative peace strategies to curb acts of genocide in Darfur. Perriello has also worked to expand the faith and values discourse in our country through his role as a co-founder of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and FaithfulAmerica.org.

Can anyone imagine Virgil Goode making a statement like this one?  That's just one reason I'm strongly supporting Tom Perriello for Congress in the 5th CD. Go Tom!

Oh (leftofcenter - 1/21/2008 3:47:05 PM)
Come ON. I know you are all big Obama supporters here but he needs to quit whining. If he can't even stand up to Bill Clinton's criticisms what is going to do if he wins the nomination and has Rove et al come after him? What did you all expect Bill Clinton to do? Stand in the corner and keep his mouth shut?
This is politics in the big time. I know everyone wants the candidates to sit around and hug each other and sing campfire songs but it ain't gonna happen. If Obama can't take care of Bill Clinton, then he's going to get slaughtered by the rethugs in the general. He needs to get his game on even if it is within his own party and stand up and fight.
Good grief.

This diary is about Tom Perriello (Lowell - 1/21/2008 4:04:40 PM)
making a statement on Martin Luther King Day.  What does Barack Obama have to do with this?

Tom is Inspirational (ayoungprogressive - 1/21/2008 4:34:48 PM)
These words are a perfect example of the inspirational nature of Tom's candidacy. When politicians speak in the positive fashion they bring people into the political process, and it was statements like this which motivated me to volunteer my time to Tom's campaigna and constantly prove to me that Tom is who Virginia needs.

A guy who can actually win (kylegardiner - 1/23/2008 10:20:51 PM)
This is why Tom is insanely amazing. He's charismatic, a great speaker, and has a passion about the truly important issues of the 21st century (namely, social welfare), and applies them both here and abroad. His track record is astounding, and if he can do a quarter as my representative as he has done for countless peoples of the world, I will be once again proud to reside in the 5th district.
GO TOM!
