Kaine: Obama is Most Electable

Gov. Kaine is quoted in The Politico article, "Red-state Dems sour on Clinton":

During extensive interviews in recent weeks in Republican-leaning states, Politico found widespread belief among current and former Democratic statewide officials that Obama is the more electable candidate with their electorates. These politicians also frequently registered a fear that Clinton's personality and past history make her too polarizing to win independent and Republican-leaning voters.

[...]

"I happen to believe that Obama is the most electable, both in Virginia and elsewhere," said Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, an early Obama backer. "I really think to win you gotta get independent votes....Independent voters like people who they don't believe are defined by political orthodoxy."

At the Washington Post's Virginia politics blog, Tim Craig notes that "In the past, Kaine has largely steered clear of questions about whether Clinton could win in a traditionally red state like Virginia."  Looks like the rhetoric in this race continues to intensify as we get closer to "Tsunami Tuesday" -- and also to the Virginia primary on February 12.

It's a word, thats all "electable" is (Demo08 - 1/16/2008 12:31:27 AM)
I find it interesting that when so most polls show Hillary doing better or just as well as any other Democrat, that people are crying electable. So Obama brings out one prominate Red State Governor who I certainly respect a lot. But what i'll take the opinion of Strickland (the ultimate red state governor) or how about Bob Kerrey from one of the reddest states or Even Bayh a very popular former Governor and now 2nd term Senator.
Some point out that the Democratic Chair of Wyoming said that Hillary will hurt their chances. ummmm... ya because outside of a Governor you all have been doing such a great job of winning all by yourselves.
As we saw in the debate tonight when the election is about substance, Hillary wins. What the Clinton's have always been good at is making sure that voters make a choice on the issues. With the current situation in the world and the trouble we have right here at home with our economy, there is no question Hillary will win.
So if you're going to say the word "electable" please come with something to back it up.

Okay...this will be long.... (DanG - 1/16/2008 1:46:58 AM)
1. Since when did Ohio become a red state?  It's the ultimate PURPLE STATE, not red!  Virginia is a red state: Bush won by 9.  Bush won by a few thousand in Ohio.  That's called a Purple State.
2.  Bob Kerrey's endorsement was horrible.  He called Obama a coward and Edwards and ambulance chaser.  What an ass.
3. Evan Bayh has been pretty damned silent recently.  Just sayin'.
4.  How about the fact that Obama polls a point better than Hillary against McCain, and at least 5 points better against all the other GOP candidates?  Don't believe me?

Do I think Hillary is unelectable?  No.  I don't think she can beat McCain, but she can certainly beat everybody else.  But is Obama more electable than her?  Well, from what evidence we have (polls, which admittedly are circumstance after NH), it appears so.

Did that "back it up" enough for ya?
