Tim Craig: "Feder Building Campaign Warchest"

As I reported over at Farewell Frank, Judy Feder is raising money like mad.  Tim Craig writes that Feder is "building [a] campaign warchest" in her race against Frank Wolf:

Judy Feder, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 10th District, announced today she raised $600,000 in 2007, including almost $250,000 during the last three months of the year.

Great job by Judy, especially considering how much substance there is in addition to the impressive fundraising.  Meanwhile, Frank Wolf's been rather quiet, unless you count his recent, outrageous behavior in Israel or his frantic fundraising letters saying that Judy Feder's looking like a big threat to him.  This should be a fun year, just not for Frank Wolf.

Do you think Mike Turner will drop out of the primary ? (Tom Counts - 1/15/2008 4:28:55 PM)
The only time I've had direct contact with Judy's Dem. primary opponent I asked him how his fund raising was going and he basically said "not very well". I haven't checked his 2007 4th QTR financial report yet, but without a publicly visible fund raiser I can't imagine that he could have enough money to stay in the primary race beyond early April, if that long.

Mike is a very good speaker and seems to be quite knowledgeable on most of the important issues, but he has close to zero name recognition even in the Dem. party in the 10th CD, and has had no prior campaign experience and little (if any) campaign staff. Obviously, without funding any staff he might have would almost certainly have to be unpaid volunteers.

That said, I can't invision any way Judy would not be running unopposed beyond petition circulation time in April.  Therefore, she will not have to waste any money, energy or time on a primary. I don't recall if anyone has hinted they might challenge Wolf in a primary (or more likely a convention to minimize the waste of money needed for the general election). But with Judy's huge and rapidly growing war chest Wolf and the RPVA must know that the 10th CD is a likely new Dem. seat this year. My best guess is that Wolf will just go through the motions, then gratiously congratulate Judy on her win and then thank her for runninig a positive campaign.

Just my opinions, but I believe they are firmly based on fact. I think Judy is a terrific candidate and campaigner. She learned a lot in the 2006 campaign. I'm sure she gained much respect and admiration from the DPVA and many, many current and new supporters, contributors and volunteers.

No clue. (Lowell - 1/15/2008 4:41:15 PM)
Judy's focused on saying "Farewell Frank" to Rep. Wolf. :)

Mike Turner was on the Inside Scoop Virginia last night (Used2Bneutral - 1/15/2008 10:06:45 PM)
Mike sounded really good and seems to raise even further the pressure on Wolf... I gotta believe that Judy's campaign will even benefit from the additional issues that Turner is bringing up.... His entire interview is up on Google video at URL: http://video.google.com/videop...

We expect to get Judy on the show real soon..... We have already had Doug Denneny and Leslie Byrne from the 11th CD and expect to get Connolly and any others that may decide to run. We also hope to sponsor some primary debates that are entirely oriented so our candidates can focus on content and issues and not have to do damage to each other... there is no excuse for Democrats to hurt each other's longer term electability as has happened previously.

Used2Bneutral, your point that Mike sounds really great is excellent. (Tom Counts - 1/17/2008 12:17:41 PM)
Mike is an especially good speaker. And these aren't "sound bites". He has in-depth understanding of a broad spectrum of issues important to 11th CD voters, and delivers those messages with reason and clarity. My only problems with Mike are his lack of name recognition with Democrats and nearly total lack of name recognition with Independents and the media, which in turn makes fund raising extremely difficult for him.

My previous question and comments are in no way intended to minimize Mike's command of the issues nor his ability to get the messages across. If Mike decides to drop out of the primary, or even if he doesn't and Judy wins the primary, there is no doubt at all that he will campaign for her as hard as he possibly can.

The combination of Judy and Mike on the campaign trail together, with each complementing the other's skills, will be a powerful force that Wolf cannot counter with either the voters or the media.

Go Judy! (Scripple - 1/15/2008 4:36:21 PM)
Judy did a great job in 2006, she's done a fantastic job at Georgetown, and Democrats are with her!

This is the year for her to finally win.  I know she'll make a fantastic Congresswoman!

What's really cool (Lowell - 1/16/2008 9:41:27 PM)
is that Judy's fundraising has gone up every quarter:

July 15 - 111K
Oct 15 - 223K
Jan 31 - 241K
