Big Dig Finishes $12.5 Billion Over Budget; Next Stop, Tysons

Bechtel will soon bring its shovels and non-competitive bid to build rail through Tysons to Dulles, with utility work scheduled to begin in the next few days.

ABC News reported Monday night that the Big Dig in Boston, another Bechtel gem, has finally finished.

The cost?

When work began in 1991, the Big Dig was supposed to cost $2.6 billion. But as costs skyrocketed, the federal government got fed up and capped its contribution at $8.5 billion. Final cost: $15 billion, the rest paid by state taxes and tolls.

Let's look forward to the financial mess this will lead to, the above-ground rail monster and general unpleasantness in Tysons for the next five years.

There appears to be no way to stop this train wreck as most of our elected officials, even the namesake of this blog, have folded their tents and gone home. Fairfax Supervisor Dana Kauffman, the lone sane voice, is no longer in office. Wolf and Davis are useless. Who's left? Who will stand up for us, the taxpayers and commuters who will be paying the inevitable cost overruns for years to come?

Happy New Year, especially to the Bechtel Billionaires.
