The Daily Press has its top 10 Virginia news stories of 2007.

1. The shootings at Virginia Tech
2. Michael Vick's dogfighting ring
3. Democrats take Virginia Senate
4. Abusive-driver fees
5. Death of U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Davis
6. Local casualties mount in the war in Iraq
7. Sen. John Warner announces retirement
8. The Wren Cross debate
9. The queen comes to town
10. VA psychiatric unit criticized in patient deaths

I basically agree with most of these, although not necessarily in the order they're presented.  Also, I don't particularly see #8-#10 as huge stories.  I'd replace them with -- in no particular order -- the debate over "illegal immigration" (probably put this one towards the top of the list), the environmental crisis as it's affecting Virginia (Chesapeake Bay, coal-fired power plant pollution, etc.), and the rise to prominence of Jim Webb (particularly his response to Bush's state of the union address and his leadership in the Senate as a mere "freshman").

P.S.  I'd add "and the coming duel of former Governors (Mark Warner and Jim Gilmore)" to #7.

Huge local stories (Vivian J. Paige - 12/30/2007 10:20:16 AM)
#8 and #9, in particular, were huge local stories.

Yes, but were they state stories? (Lowell - 12/30/2007 10:43:33 AM)
The Queen's visit was, but I don't particularly see any significance to it.  The Wren Cross debate received almost no coverage outside of the immediate area, just as the Tysons Tunnel story has been mainly a "NOVA" story.

#10 was local too? (elevandoski - 12/30/2007 11:15:15 AM)
I seem to remember this one also being more a local Hampton Roads story?

Got me. (Lowell - 12/30/2007 12:03:31 PM)
I hadn't heard much about that story.

As someone with roots in Tysons and Williamsburg... (legacyofmarshall - 12/30/2007 1:19:13 PM)
I'm deeply familiar with both the tunnel and the cross stories.  I also have very strong feelings about both of them (pro-tunnel and pro-President Nichol).  At home in McLean I can't bump into a person who doesn't have an opinion about the tunnel and at school at William & Mary, especially amongst the adult community surrounding the school (not so much amongst students on campus) it's impossible to find someone without an opinion about the Wren Chapel Cross.  It's (unfortunately) integral to the Daily Press's readership, and I can see why they put it on the list.

I think the list is pretty good. I'm from the southeast end of my state (TennesseeBlues - 12/31/2007 11:46:10 AM)
and these are, for the majority, the stories I heard resonate the most. As for the tunnel, this is literally the only site I've heard that from. I also think the Queen coming to Richmond could have shifted up a notch or so.
