Concord (NH) Monitor: Romney "must be stopped"

You don't see editorials like this very often:

As a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1994, he boasted that he would be a stronger advocate of gay rights than his opponent, Ted Kennedy. These days, he makes a point of his opposition to gay marriage and adoption.

[...]

The old Romney assured voters he was pro-choice on abortion. "You will not see me wavering on that," he said in 1994, and he cited the tragedy of a relative's botched illegal abortion as the reason to keep abortions safe and legal. These days, he describes himself as pro-life.

[...]

When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state's first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we'll know it.

Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.

The editorial also calls Romney "a disquieting figure who sure looks like the next president and most surely must be stopped."

No argument here.

They're all disquieting. (PM - 12/22/2007 11:38:33 PM)
:)  They're all so awful.  And I think that's why they're all polling under 20% nationally.

If you go back through the years you could usually find someone who was relatively decent in the GOP lineup, or at least someone who didn't make you scream "I'm moving to Canada."  (And some of those years I was voting GOP.)  In 1980, there were John Anderson, Howard Baker, and Bob Dole to contend against Reagan.  In 1988 there were Dole, Bush Sr. and Kemp running.  Their policies (especially in retrospect) were not terribly enlightened, but I think they were pretty straightforward in what they stood for, and they weren't loony.

Mitt Romney is a hard core Neocon ideologue who will pick right up... (Mitch Dworkin - 12/23/2007 3:34:35 AM)

Mitt Romney IS a Neocon; His NRO endorsement should hurt him if he is nominated!

Here is where I believe that Mitt Romney will be vulnerable if he is the 2008 GOP nominee:

Some other frightening ones (Rebecca - 12/23/2007 10:41:04 PM)
Just my personal opinions:

Huckabee is a real screwball. He has a weird look in his eyes, and his son tortured a dog to death. He has absorbed some great family values.

Ron Paul is telling the truth, but doesn't seem to like government, so does he suggest we turn public services over to what he calls the fascist corporations? He seems to have all the right critiques, but no solutions. That seems typical of Libertarians. The fact is we need government of some kind. If things are left to themselves we will be in worse shape than we are now.

McCain seems to have left part of his brain somewhere, but he comes down on the right side of the torture issue.

Romney and Rudi are neocon wannabes.

I can't remember the names of the sane ones so that tells you something about how much media exposure they are getting.

This editorial (novademocrat - 12/23/2007 11:29:30 PM)
Is probably one of the harshest, if not the harshest I have ever seen when talking about endorsements/candidates.

I tend to view Mitt Romney as the most successful used car salesman on the lot - he's very polished, very successful and will tell you exactly what you want to here in order to sell you a POS (aka his candidacy.)  And when you have nearly unlimited resources to run a primary against lackluster competition, you might actually come out on top.

That being said, I still think Huckabee will be their nominee and that scares me.  But if Mitt somehow pulls this out, I welcome that challenge to any of our candidates, even Kucinich.
