yellow elephantOn Jan. 12 in Montross, Republicans will gather to decide who gets the honor of losing to Albert Pollard 38 days later. Names being bandied about include Bay Banks President Austin Roberts, former King George Supervisor Bob Barlow, and attorney Lee Anne Washington.

Pollard was first elected to the 99th District in 1999, winning 53% of the vote. In 2001 he received 61% of the vote, then 65% in 2003. Pollard opted not to run for a 4th term in 2005, and that's when Rob Wittman took over the seat.

In this district, Pollard won 57% of the vote against Richard Stuart in their State Senate race. In Stuart's home county of Westmoreland, located entirely within the 99th, Pollard did even better. The only area Stuart did win was King George County, just barely.

Question (jiacinto - 12/22/2007 12:12:43 PM)
What makes Pollard so popular in the 99th?

He's one of them. Many local Republicans walk around like they're royalty or something. He's very active in the community and people just know him. And if you've met Albert you know he's pretty much impossible not to like. He epitomizes the Northern Neck.

And when Albert says he works in a bi-partisan fashion, he actually means it. Many moderate Republicans think the world of him. He just concentrates on local issues, he doesn't get caught up in gay marriage sideshows or crap like that.

Plus he's just worked for it. He's a political thoroughbred, and his charm and natural charisma just takes care of the rest.
