Following a recount requested by Janet Oleszek (D), State. Sen. Ken Cuccinelli (R) has been declared the winner in the 37th district by 101 votes.  That is according to Scott Surovell, chair of the Mt. Vernon District Democratic Committee.  This race was definitely a winnable one, and I'm very disappointed that we didn't do so.

Janet Oleszek statement (Lowell - 12/20/2007 6:07:18 PM)
"I am pleased to have participated in the recount of one of the closes races in the 2007 general election.

As we learned in this process, the current Virginia recount statute does not allow us to do more than re-examine the touch screen voting machine tapes.  In reality this process falls far short of a true recount.  It is clear that we need to revise Virginia's statutes governing access to all votes cast, and I will be an advocate for that change.

I would like to thank my supporters, friends, and family for the confidence that they have shown in me throughout the campaign.  I would also like to thank the general registrar's office and Clerk of the Court's office for their professionalism during these procedures.

Immediately after the recount I offered my congratulations to Senator Cuccinelli.  This was an incredibly hard fought election on both sides and voters were presented with a clear choice.  With a margin of victory of only .25%, Ken Cuccinelli will be representing a moderate district, and I know his tenure in the General Assembly will reflect his constituency.
