Today, Politco names Jim Webb the Senate's Rookie of the Year.  The article, Anti-war Webb was talk of Senate from Day 1 discusses Webb's rise, his key initiatives, like the "New Truman Commission" and the expanded GI Bill.  Plus, this article is jam-packed full of great quotes.

Here are a few favs.  Enjoy!

In the NBA, Sen. Jim Webb would have been a can't-miss, No. 1 draft pick.

"He is a unique and weird combination of street-brawler and professor," said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), one of Webb's closest friend. ... "he's got an instinct. He knows when to go for the kill."

"I can safely say that I am the only person ever elected to state office in Virginia with a union card, two Purple Hearts and three tattoos," he said in an interview.

"You want to be respected and you want to be feared," McCaskill said.

"And I think [Webb] is much more worried about those two than being loved."

his name is being whispered as a possible candidate for vice president.

Webb says he is flattered at the consideration but insists he is not interested, saying, "I really like where I am right now."

[...]

Webb remains humbled by all of the recent media attention, even joking, "I have never used steroids," to explain his rapid rise.

It's no great stretch to say that the readers of Raising Kaine are among Jim Webb's strongest supporters.  So, it's great to see Senator Webb continue gather accolades on Capitol Hill he richly deserves.

Happy Holidays, Raising Kaine, and congratulations Senator Webb!

Back in November 2005... (Greg - 12/18/2007 1:29:56 PM)
... when Lowell, myself, et al, first got interested in the prospect of a Webb candidacy, it was clear to be that Jim Webb had the potential to become a leading Democratic voice on foreign policy and defense issues if he were elected. His performance in office her certainly borne out those hopes, even more than I had expected.

"A unique and weird combination of street-brawler and professor" -- love it!

Dems have traditionally been all professor/geek, so having Jim in there adding a little macho to the mix is a good thing, I think.  We needed that extra yang to balance out all that yin...
