Last night, The Spotsylvania County Democratic Committee reorganized, then elected Opal Stroup and Doug Ferguson its new Co-Chairs.

Stroup is retired from the National Geospatial Agency after a 36-year career.  She has been an active member of the Committee since 2005, chairing both the Membership and Party Building Committees, and then leading Precinct Operations.  She said that she wants to, "continue to work to elect Democrats because (I) believe our civil liberties are eroding and we need to restore the principle that government can and should improve the quality of life for all its citizens".

Also elected were Willia Thompson as Secretary and Clemencia Ferguson as Treasurer.

Retiring Chair Jim Smith and retiring Vice-Chair Dick Toye will continue as active members.  The newly reconstituted Committee showed its appreciation for Smith's and Toye's many years of service with a prolonged standing ovation.

The Spotsylvania County Democratic Committee meets the third Monday of the month at the Snow Library in Spotsylvania.  Meetings are open to the public.
