Huckabee misrepresenting facts about his degree in theology

Some will say that Huckabee is not lying; he is misrepresenting facts, or being purposefully misleading, but not outright lying.

But wouldn't no-nonsense, God-fearing, literally interpreting Bible beliving Christians say that "misrepresenting facts" is just a fancy expression for "lying"?

Is this what a man of God does? Lie about having a degree in--of all things--theology? Is this what would Jesus do?

A Christmas present from our friends from the National Review:

Joe Carter, the director of research for Mike Huckabee, wrote in:

   Jim,

Governor Huckabee doesn't have a theology degree. He only spent a year in seminary.

Also, it's not surprising that he doesn't know much about the specific beliefs of the LDS church. There aren't a lot of LDS members in Arkansas; they comprise just .007 percent of the population (about 20,000 out of 2,810,872 people). Most Southern evangelicals don't have much exposure to that particular religion. Even in seminary you're not likely to study the LDS faith unless you take a class on apologetics.

   -Joe

I told Carter that I had gotten the crazy idea that Huckabee had a theology degree from his statements like, "I'm the only guy on that stage with a theology degree." And press accounts like:

I asked Huckabee, who describes himself as the only Republican candidate with a degree in theology, if he considered Mormonism a cult or a religion. ''I think it's a religion,'' he said. ''I really don't know much about it.''

Carter responded, "Good point. To me, a degree in theology requires a degree from a seminary. What the Governor has is a BA in Biblical Studies. Technically, that can be considered a "theology degree." But its probably not what most people think of when they hear that term."

Interesting anecdote about Huckabee in NYT (PM - 12/16/2007 8:15:31 PM)
In the recent NYT article about Huckabee, this caught my eye:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12...

In late November, Huckabee began running a short television ad called ''Believe.'' It starts with the candidate declaring, ''Faith doesn't just influence me, it really defines me.'' As he speaks, the words ''Christian Leader'' flash across the screen. This ad was, of course, directed at the evangelical voters of Iowa. But it has also caught the attention of big-time figures in evangelical Christianity, many of whom have refrained from supporting Huckabee's candidacy. This failure has puzzled and angered the governor. At the Olive Garden he spoke with bitterness about Richard Land, the president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. ''Richard Land swoons for Fred Thompson,'' he said. ''I don't know what that's about. For reasons I don't fully understand, some of these Washington-based people forget why they are there. They make 'electability' their criterion. But I am a true soldier for the cause. If my own abandon me on the battlefield, it will have a chilling effect.''

What does "true soldier for the cause" mean?

BTW, Huckabee thinks Duncan Hunter would make a good Secretary of Defense (from the same article).

Wow. This guy gives me the willies. (Catzmaw - 12/17/2007 4:09:27 PM)
