Democratic candidate Phil Forgit, Republican Rob Wittman, and self-described conservative Independent Lucky Narain met recently in Norfolk for the special election's lone debate in this abbreviated campaign for the vacant 1st congressional district seat. Kimball Payne of the Daily Press had this to say about the event, which seemed to sum things up pretty well:

Forgit was clearly the most aggressive candidate. He dominated the discussion so much that when producers briefly stopped taping the show for a commercial break, a Wittman aide quickly approached host Joel Rubin.

"I was under the impression that this wasn't going to be a debate," the aide said.

When the discussion turned to issues of conservation, the GOP candidate did his best Albert Pollard impersonation, the Democrat who occupied the 99th district for several years prior to Wittman. Like Pollard, Wittman pointed out he was once named the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Legislator of the Year, prompting Forgit to respond, "welcome to the Democratic Party." Forgit then went on to remind Del. Wittman of the Republican Party's abysmal record on the enviornment and energy independence. The same went for immigration, which the Republicans in Washington and Richmond have ignored for years until it became this year's newest "hot button" issue.
