Interesting to see the election results for Governor in red (Republican) and blue (Democrat).  Note Kaine's strengths in Northern Virginia, the Richmond area, and Hampton Roads.  Also please note that Kaine also did well in numerous rural counties like Buchanan, Giles, Montgomery, Alleghany, Henry, Prince Edward, Albermarle and Nelson.  Overall, a very impressive map of Kaine Blue!  Click for full size.

There now are maps o (Dr. David Hardin - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
There now are maps on my homeage showing the difference between Kaine 2005 percentages and Warner 2001, Kerry 2004, and Kaine 2001.

Dr. Hardin: I'd love (Lowell - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Dr. Hardin: I'd love to see a comparison map of Kaine 2005 vs. Warner 2001.  Also, Kaine 2005 vs. Kerry 2004 would be interesting as well.  Finally, now about showing where Kaine had coattails - where he ran ahead of his ticketmates and/or House of Delegates candidates -- or where he lagged.  Thanks! - Lowell

The data for the abo (Dr. David Hardin - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
The data for the above map and others came straight from the State Board of Elections and reflect numbers as of 4:20 pm on the 8th.  I also have created maps for Kaine/Kilgore victory margins, Lt. Gov., Att. Gen., and the Potts vote.  If anyone can think of another way to look at the data, I can pop out maps pretty quickly.  All of those (and any updates once 100% of the votes are in) can be found on my homepage: http://www.longwood.edu/staff/hardinds/dh.htm
Josh's map comparing Kaine/Byrne/Deeds wins raises some interesting questions as well.

Alice, I live on (Sam - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Alice,

I live on the Shore (Accomack County) and the reason we won was a strong grassroots campaign that knocked on literally thousands of doors.  Raising Kaine PAC worked with both the Accomack and Northampton County Democratic Parties to rebuild and expand, and they organized a solid month's worth of canvassing.  I also hit about 700 doors for RK, and other RK canvassers got hundreds more and sent hundreds of postcards to Democratic voters.  The Accomack Party also had a heavy radio presence with an endorsement from popular Democratic Delegate Lynwood Lewis.

Glad to see Buchanan (Chris from ASL - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Glad to see Buchanan County was not fooled by Kilgore. Two corrections, Poquoson and York County are red areas, sadly.

Another big surprise (Matusleo - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Another big surprise is that Kaine won in Harrisonburg.  The Shenandoah valley is typically the GOP's strongest area in the state.  That was a real coup!

Josh: I took the so (Nichole - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Josh:
I took the source data from http://www.sbe.vipnet.org/ and placed in an a spreadsheet.

I have been doing MUCH studying, so if you wish to discuss, let me know.

The biggest surprise (Alice Marshall - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
The biggest surprise for me was the Eastern Shore. Do you suppose voters there have finally worked out the connection between smart growth policies in the urban areas and the health of the fishing industry?

Here's another neat (Steve Nelson - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Here's another neat map.

Nichole: do you hav (Josh - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
Nichole:  do you have a link to the source material for this map?

We have much studying to do.

A few random thought (Greg - 4/4/2006 11:29:19 PM)
A few random thoughts:

1. Fairfax is obviously the big story here, going from a less than 10% margin for Warner in 2001 to a 22% margin this time.

2. Virginia Beach was the other large jurisdiction with a major shift -- from a 7% Republican margin in 2001 to a slight Kaine victory today.

3. Turnout in the "deepest blue" areas of Northern Virginia -- Arlington And Alexandria where Democrats win by 40% margins -- was still a disappointment.  Democrats still need to do some thinking on how to reach these people, particularly high-rise residents.
