Giuliani Billed Taxpayers for Summer "Shenanigans?"

Very nice, Rudy. Very nice.

Rudy Giuliani, in the later years of his mayoralty, was in the habit of billing travel expenses to obscure city agencies. Politico.com's Ben Smith reports that among the expenses (hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth were racked up during Giuliani's aborted run for senator) are over $30,000 which might be related to the mayor's clandestine affair with Judith Nathan. In other words, taxpayers may have been paying the tab for part of his shenanigans.

For the original scoop by The Politico, see here. More fine "family values" from the "family values" party.

National Review point (PM - 11/28/2007 7:39:23 PM)
A National Review blog argues:

One more flaw in a YouTube debate - if all of the questions have to come from pre-submitted, pre-screened YouTube videos, will anyone be able to ask about a late-breaking story like "Rudy Giuliani billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons"?

I've noticed a good amount of coverage in the MSM on this story.

Yeah, but... (ericy - 11/28/2007 8:58:11 PM)

There will be plenty of time to ask him about this sort of stuff in the future.  And I have no doubt that the talking heads will be talking about how nobody was able to ask this question, which will serve to get the story out there.

He was asked (vadem - 11/28/2007 10:30:25 PM)
and he said he didn't do anything wrong, nor did his police department. Of course, it was all his police department, and not him.  I look forward to seeing this developed further and having him held under the magnifying glass.

Great, blame the police. (Lowell - 11/28/2007 10:59:06 PM)
The firefighters already hate him, I guess he's going for the clean sweep of NYC first responders.

Was the WTC command center his love nest? (PM - 11/28/2007 10:56:41 PM)
In his Village Voice article, long time Giuliani reporter Wayne Barrett focuses on Rudy insisting on a command center that was within walking distance of City Hall, which other experts have called a terrible choice (since the WTC had been the #1 target before).  Kind of buried in the article is this raw diamond: http://www.villagevoice.com/ne...

Giuliani's office had a humidor for cigars and mementos from City Hall, including a fire horn, police hats and fire hats, as well as monogrammed towels in his bathroom. His suite was bulletproofed and he visited it often, even on weekends, bringing his girlfriend Judi Nathan there long before the relationship surfaced. He had his own elevator.

His own elevator?  And he and his mistress Judy went there on weekends?

Remember that Bernie Kerik had his own love nest (married with two girl friends -- sounds like a sitcom title) on the site of Ground Zero.  http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12...

What a drag! (Kindler - 11/28/2007 11:12:13 PM)
Rudy is one of the sleaziest people to be seriously considered for president in modern times.

If he were nominated, the process of unpacking all of his personal and professional baggage during the campaign would, I predict, lead to the greatest landslide for a Democrat since Lyndon Johnson buried Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Not to mention...he makes one BUTT-UGLY woman!!

Just in case anyone has never seen it -- there's the link of the video where "the Donald" flirts with Rudy in drag; funny and dyspepsia inducing at the same time.

Thanks, but... (Kindler - 11/29/2007 9:33:28 PM)
...I'll watch it after I've digested my dinner a little more fully!

ABC Update on Rudy: Judy used NYPD as a taxi service (PM - 11/29/2007 5:43:03 PM)
Well before it was publicly known he was seeing her, then-married New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani provided a police driver and city car for his mistress Judith Nathan, former senior city officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

"On the face of it, I can't see any reason why the mayor's travel expenses should be allocated to the Loft Board, unless he is traveling to examine lofts in other cities," said Michael Granof, a University of Texas government accounting expert.
