another possible Republican gay sex scandal?

The story is now all over the tubes that the apparent reason for Trent Lott's surprise resignation from the Senate is that he is now connected with a gay escort.

I first learned about it when my wife sent me an email with a link to this Andrew Sullivan piece.

There are now two diaries up at dailykos about this, and in the discussion threads there are comments about various gay blogs also now discussing the story.

More.
Here are the two dailykos diaries:

and

as I write this the first has gone up to the recommended box. I commented on that one, including reminding people that like Lott Craig was for a while in the Republican senate leadership team.  Also, there have been rumors about Mitch McConnell for quite some time.

Not putting this on the front page.  Informational only for those people who had not yet heard the rumors.

That would be 2 of 4 (Lowell - 11/26/2007 8:52:41 PM)
Singing Senators:

  * John Ashcroft (R-Missouri) - Baritone
  * Larry Craig (R-Idaho) - Lead
  * James Jeffords (R-Vermont) - Tenor
  * Trent Lott (R-Mississippi) - Bass

Where are they now... (legacyofmarshall - 11/27/2007 2:00:26 PM)
John Ashcroft - Lost re-election bid to a dead person, made Attorney General, abandoned by the Bush administration while facing serious illness.

Larry Craig - Arrested for lewd behavior and is almost definitely an outwardly-homophobic closet gay.

James Jeffords - Switched parties and resigned in 2006.

Trent Lott - Lost job as Majority Leader for racist comments.  Now resigning because... well you decide.

Wow, combine that with scandal-ridden Ted Stevens, George Felix Macaca Allen, John McCain the sellout, and more... being a Republican Senator isn't anything be all too proud of.  Jim Jeffords knew what he was doing.

"Did Trent Lott Keep Gay Rent Boy?" (Lowell - 11/26/2007 8:56:59 PM)
You weren't kidding!  Check this out:

The way BHDC tells it, Lott may have been involved with an escort named Benjamin Nichols:

  "Nicholas told Big Head DC today via e-mail that he didn't want to go on the record to talk about his dealings with Lott, because, said Nicholas, "Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don't want to add to it." However, e-mail and other records confirm that the two have met on at least two occasions.

  "All I can say at this point is no comment," Nicholas told us. "It's the professional thing for me to do."

  In a subsequent e-mail message, Nicholas confirmed that another publication is working on a story about a "possible relationship" between Lott and himself, but Nicholas also "politely declined" an interview for that story."

If Nicholas' name sounds familiar, it should: he previously spoke out against Ted Haggard's boy toy, Mike Jones, for airing the preacher man's dirty laundry.

Nicholas denies it (Lowell - 11/26/2007 9:01:56 PM)
here. So much for THAT story?

Nicholas has changed his story several times (teacherken - 11/27/2007 12:27:03 AM)
earlier in day he was saying he had no CURRENT relationship with Trent Lott.

And there is a fair amount of speculation that this is the blockbuster scandal to which Larry Flynt was alluding recently

A recitation of Lott's civil rights record (PM - 11/26/2007 9:16:27 PM)

This article reminds us that Lott had a long, terrible record on civil rights.  I hope he retires to Mississippi and does not stay active on the Hill as a lobbyist.

fwiw (jsrutstein - 11/26/2007 9:29:30 PM)
During my year on the Hill in 2003 there was one Senator way above all others in just being a nice friendly guy to me in the hallway and elevator, Trent Lott.  I knew who he was and how far his views diverged from mine, but I'm telling you the guy was really nice.  And, if there's any truth at all to the escort rumors, I don't think that's why he was being nice to me, because, trust me, I'm a lot less attractive than that guy.  In contrast, Hillary Clinton's Senate office was right by my office.  I saw her a lot and tried and tried to get her to say hi, smile, or even make eye contact to no avail.  I don't think she was mean.  I just think she lacked that certain something that very good politicians have.  Bill Clinton was reportedly very charming, even Newt Gingrich said so.  Once I even met Marion Barry walking downtown shortly after he was busted in that sting, and I felt an overwhelming urge to say something supportive.  Weird.

The HRC is glad to see Lott go (PM - 11/26/2007 10:07:55 PM)
from the Human Rights Campaign blog:

Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), the number two Republican in the U.S. Senate as minority whip, announced his intentions to retire today, reports the AP.  Sen. Lott's shameful record of opposing and working against GLBT civil rights during his 35 years in Congress, including being a key sponsor of anti-gay marriage constitutional amendments in 2004 and 2006 and recent vote against hate crimes, has earned him a lineup of zeroes on HRC's congressional scorecards from 2002 - 2006.

Don't Forget Mitch McConnell (Matt H - 11/27/2007 11:49:16 AM)
He's not out yet, but speculation is that he's gay too.  The more homophobic one is (in my opinion), the more likely one is probably gay.

There's definitely evidence (Lowell - 11/27/2007 11:55:16 AM)
of a correlation between homophobia and repressed homosexuality.  So, given that the GOP is the homophobia party, what does that suggest?  Hmmmm.

It Goes Beyond Homophobia (Matt H - 11/27/2007 12:11:32 PM)
They simply can't resist any of their sexual desires even heterosexual desires.  Remember Ascroft's wanton desire to mount lady liberty at the DoJ?  It got so difficult for him to control he spent $8000 to cover her bare stone-cold breast.
