UVA Beats Penn 100-85 in Hoops

This story -- "Virginia Routs Quakers 100-85" -- certainly qualifies for the "mixed feelings" category.  On the one hand, I've lived in Virginia since 1986 -- 21 years now.  I didn't attend the University of Virginia, but the Commonwealth is my home.  On the other hand, the University of Pennsylvania is my alma mater.  Given that I don't have cable or satellite TV, I rarely see either school's men's basketball team -- the Cavaliers or the Quakers -- play.  Last night, however, I was out with some friends at a restaurant which had a big screen TV showing the Penn-UVA game.  I've got a lot of great memories of games at the Palestra, but I could quickly tell that this wasn't going to be one of them as the Cavaliers completely dominated the Quakers in the Philly Hoop Group Classic game.  And in this case, I can't even console myself with the thought that Penn's a better school academically, because Virginia's a great university too.  Sigh...I guess I'll just root for Penn to beat Princeton and for UVA to go undefeated this year. :)

P.S.  And don't forget the big football game today between UVA and Virginia Tech.  The Washington Post has this to say:

As Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia prepare for what may be their most important football matchup ever, there is an unmistakable change in tenor to the fierce historic rivalry among fans.

Seven months after the massacre at Tech that claimed 32 lives plus the killer's, and the outpouring of support that came from other schools, including U-Va., boosters on both sides say the petty stereotypes that once divided them have largely been set aside.

On the other hand, as the article notes, "Brotherly love aside, there's still a game to be played, and some things never change."  Thank goodness.

(Just, please, don't let it be embarrassing.)

Great Game! (Matusleo - 11/25/2007 12:29:58 AM)
Good job to both teams who played a wonderful game!  But I'm still glad my Hokies won. :-)

Another blow to galloping State-U-ism. (spotter - 11/25/2007 8:57:38 AM)
Tech won, U.Va. lost, but at least not by an embarrassing margin.  All's right with the world.  Now can we please have the Pep Band back?
