This Can't Possibly Be Real!

No way, this can't possibly be real:

"Billions of jellyfish wipe out N. Irish salmon farm"

Can this actually happen?!?  What next, are billions of jellyfish going to swarm up the Chesapeake Bay and wipe out Virginia?  Run!!!!

[UPDATE by Rob:  Another evidence of global warming?  "The species of jellyfish responsible, Pelagia nocticula -- popularly known as the mauve stinger -- is noted for its purplish night-time glow and its propensity for terrorizing bathers in the warmer Mediterranean Sea. Until the past decade, the mauve stinger has rarely been spotted so far north in British or Irish waters, and scientists cite this as evidence of global warming."]

Global Warming? (PM - 11/21/2007 7:27:54 PM)

Who knows what changes will be wrought by global warming.  Did you know that--

The fossil record has yielded various gigantic arthropods, in contrast to their diminutive proportions today. The recent discovery of a 46cm long claw (chelicera) of the pterygotid eurypterid ('sea scorpion') *** reveals that this form attained a body length of approximately 2.5m***. Gigantism in Late Palaeozoic arthropods is generally attributed to elevated atmospheric oxygen levels, but while this may be applicable to Carboniferous terrestrial taxa, gigantism among aquatic taxa is much more widespread and may be attributed to other extrinsic factors, including environmental resources, predation and competition.

Under different climates, all kinds of weird creatures evolved.  So, who knows --  will we have big, succulent lobster type creatures walking down the Fairfax County Parkway?

I wonder if the eight years we've lost in the fight against global warming will make any difference.  Tragic to have a know nothing in the Oval Office at this time.

I'm very afraid...

VB Jellyfish (code - 11/21/2007 7:56:07 PM)
So actually, several 10's of millions of jellyfish *do* swarm up the Chesapeake every summer (August). Sometimes it's so bad you can't swim. But they're not the dangerous kind. Just thought I'd throw in an "I grew up in Virginia Beach" fact .

Yeah NOAA has a tracking site (tx2vadem - 11/21/2007 8:17:26 PM)
They have site where they even forecast for one type of jellyfish: the sea nettle.  See here: http://155.206.18.16...

Wait until insects and various forms of hostile vegetation move further north (Used2Bneutral - 11/22/2007 2:26:59 AM)
the Northeast and higher latitude locations have had typically a lot less insect damage issues like they have in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, etc. As the mean temperature rises there will be less hard freezes and more kinds of normally seasonal insects will flourish.... and then there is Kudzu....http://www.yahoolavi... for those that are not familiar with it, it moves north further each year and especially where it has a longer growing season with average warmth increasing...

Obtw, it appears someone has artificially planted some Kudzu behind a shopping center near the reservoir in Lorton.... not a smart thing to do.....
