CD-1: Who the Heck is Lucky Narain?

Bryan Scrafford has reported on his blog that a third party candidate has joined the CD-1 race against Democrat Phil Forgit and Republican Rob Wittman. That candidate is one Lucky R. Narain, who's apparently filed all the necessary paperwork and even has a website up, www.votelucky.com. Unfortunately I don't know who this guy is or what he stands for. In other words, who will this guy take more votes from...Forgit or Wittman? Bryan couldn't get much out of Narain when the two of them spoke, so it's anyone's guess right now.

Here's Scrafford:

In a brief phone conversation I had with him earlier this evening, Lucky mentioned that he is a Virginia local - he grew up in York County - and has studied at Christopher Newport, Carnegie Mellon, and Fordham. He has also served in the Army Reserves and in the Dominican Republic with the Peace Corps. Although he has not made his official announcement yet, he also noted that one of his major issues will be looking out for the best interests of our men and women in uniform.

No "authorized by" on Web site (hereinva - 11/13/2007 11:11:18 PM)
Well, it is a mystery. No authorization or "paid for" language. According to WhoIs, the domain name is registered to Lucky Narain in Houston TX. Domain name registered April 2006.

There are several Google entrys for "Lucky Narain". Waiting for other "indys" to show.

In our brief conversation.... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 11/14/2007 12:17:58 AM)
... he told me that he was "a conservative independent." If that's how he's casting himself now, I imagine he would take more votes away from Wittman.

That's good news (Chris Guy - 11/14/2007 12:29:46 AM)
but I'm not holding my breath that this guy should be taken seriously. Especially with the election 4 weeks away and starting from total obscurity.

Did he file his petition with 1500 names? (John Carter - 11/14/2007 12:18:06 AM)
You need 1000, but 1500 to be safe.  I hadn't heard of anyone circulating a Congressional petition, but it's a big district.

Okay, I should have followed the link. (John Carter - 11/14/2007 12:20:27 AM)
I would have seen that he did.

Yes, according to Scrafford (Chris Guy - 11/14/2007 12:23:15 AM)
he has the signatures.

Lucky Narain considered running (John Carter - 11/14/2007 12:36:50 AM)
for House of Delegates-96th District, as a Democrat, in the 2000 special election. He was 21 years old and had just graduated from CNU.  He was interviewed and made a positive impression, but the consensus was that he should put in some time and shoe leather, learn the ropes and pick his spot.  His argument was that he would bring in never-voted-before youth and the Indian-American community.  He was persuaded not to contest the nomination to clear the way for what we felt was a stronger candidate.

He assisted in the special election which was a close but losing cause. He participated briefly in the local committee, but then decided to join the Peace Corps.

Changed parties? (Eric - 11/14/2007 10:33:36 AM)
Lucky ran as a Democrat 7 years ago and someone reported above that he's now an "independent conservative".  Is this a change  by Lucky or just due to lack of solid info on him?

He told me... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 11/14/2007 11:00:56 AM)
.... in a phone conversation that he was a "conservative independent." It appears as though he also used that terminology with the Daily Press, so I guess we could chalk it up to a change of Party.

Irony time. (John Carter - 11/14/2007 11:45:48 AM)
Lucky's running as an independent may spring from disappointment with the Democratic "establishment" that dissuaded him from running for the 96th in 2000.

Ironically,if he had followed the "establishment's" advice, he would have been in perfect position to run for the 96th in 2003, with full support.  The 2000 and 2001 campaigns came up short.  The 2003 race was uncontested.  Three years of establishing contacts and building up a campaign organization might have made for a formidable challenge.

Wasn't Phil Forgit the democratic candidate in 2003 in the 96th (Shawn - 11/14/2007 1:27:24 PM)

My mistake. It was 2005 (John Carter - 11/14/2007 6:04:16 PM)
where the race went uncontested.

How quickly we banish defeats to the recess of memory.

The situation is now somewhat less ironic.
