Wow, this is stunning.

Sen. John W. Warner, R-Va. sharply criticized the Virginia GOP yesterday as rigid and intolerant of moderation.

"The rigidity of this outfit is going to keep taking it down until they hit bottom. And I don't know when that will be," Warner said of Tuesday's election results. "And I find it quite distressing."

The election resulted in important gains for Democrats. The fifth-term senator said he was saddened but not surprised.

Wow, Senator Warner, do you want to come be a "front pager" here at RK?  Ha.

By the way, I couldn't agree more with NLS with regard to RPV communications director Shaun "Jew Baiting" Kenney:

John Warner who has served for 30 years and is Virginia's most popular politician gives his opinion on the election- and the party spokesman isn't classy enough to say "no comment" and instead disagrees with the Senior Senator in the article.

No wonder why the Virginia Republican Party is in free fall.

P.S.  Will John Warner endorse Mark Warner next year?  I sure can't see John Warner endorsing Jim Gilmore, especially given the last paragraph of this Richmond Times Dispatch article.

J. Warner, irritant (Nell - 11/9/2007 1:59:23 PM)
Warner's right about the rigidity of the state party, but he's  in no position to lecture anyone.  He's had multiple chances to bail on the Bush-Cheney agenda, to vote independently of the rigid Republican line in the Senate, and how many times has he done so?

What's he trying to do? Protect his legacy? (pol - 11/9/2007 4:04:50 PM)
I agree with Nell.  He has had numerous times to stand up for what was right by voting against the Bush-Cheney wishlist, and he didn't do it.

Warner's only redeeming value in my eyes is his non-support of Ollie North.

One of the comments on the RTD article linked above is this:

"Unfortunately, I think that Senator Warner's old age is getting to him. He should have run as a Democrat instead of running as a Republican. The point of being a conservative is being intolerant of certain issues. "

Indeed.  The modern definition of conservatism is based in intolerance.  The historical definition of conservatism is based in keeping government out of private matters.

With respect to Senator Warner's comments and to the substantial decline in the fortunes of the Virginia GOP, 'nuff said.
