Who Will Run in the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts?

With last night's election results in, it's time to turn our attention to the special election for Congress in the 1st district, and also to 2008.

With regard to the 1st district, the Democratic Party will select a nominee through a nominating convention later this week.  Each county will hold a caucus, either on Thursday evening (11/8), or in Colonial Williamsburg on Saturday morning (11/10).

The two confirmed Democratic candidates for the nomination are Phil Forgit and Ted Hontz. Republicans have nearly a dozen candidates, but are most likely to nominate former Virginia Club for Growth President Paul Jost or Jo Ann Davis' widower Chuck Davis. The election to fill the seat  will be held on Tuesday, December 11.

As far as 2008 is concerned, there are going to be a number of interesting races here in Virginia.  One of those could very well be in the 2nd Congressional district against Bush rubber stamp, Thelma Drake.  Theoretically, Drake should be politically vulnerable, given that she received just 51 percent of the vote last year.  In addition, Drake has steadfastly supported Bush's misbegotten Iraq war and has voted to deny health care to poor children.  She even ranks dead last for influence and effectiveness among Virginia's congressional delegation.  Ouch.

First, though, Democrats have to find someone to challenge Drake.  One rumor I've heard is that a young Democrat named Glenn Nye might run.  A lifelong Virginian, Nye grew up in Norfolk and graduated from the Norfolk Academy, where he has addressed students on foreign affairs issues.  He is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and is currently serving as a civilian in Iraq.

Reportedly, Nye is being encouraged to run by... well, let's just say "various people."  My sources tell me that Nye was back in the United States last month.  While here, he reportedly made numerous phone calls to gauge the level of support he could expect if he ran for Congress next year.

Has anyone heard of Glenn Nye or any other possible Democratic candidates to run against Thelma Drake next year?  What do you think it will take for Democrats to win this seat?

P.S.  According to yesterday's Hotline:

...the possible Dem pickup of the VA state Senate will be the big story of the night. And if it does happen, GOPers like Frank Wolf (R-VA 10), Tom Davis (R-VA 11) and even Thelma Drake (R-VA 02) may have more to worry about than just the redistricting implications for '12. They'll feel the heat in '08.

That's right, Thelma Drake could be in trouble, as well as Tom Davis (if he doesn't retire first) and Frank Wolf.  Should be an interesting year!

Paul Jost? (science - 11/7/2007 8:00:57 PM)
Lowell--Why do you think Jost is likely to win Saturday?  I've talked to several GOP friends (I'm a rabid Democrat, of course) who are delegates.  They tell me that Jost has been  despised by many Republicans since he tried to oust Tommy Norment.  There is a sense that he is perhaps the only Republican candidate who could actually lose to the Democrat, and after yesterday, they are worried.  It seems likely, but not yet certain, that they will coalesce around Davis...

Mainly because the Club for Growth PAC (Lowell - 11/7/2007 8:10:03 PM)
endorsed him.  But you're right, it's certainly not a done deal.  And if the Republicans are smart, they will nominate Chuck Davis.

The Club for Growth-anointed candidate... (Johnny Longtorso - 11/7/2007 10:24:15 PM)
lost the GOP primary in Ohio's special election primary yesterday. I realize a convention is more likely to bring out the wingnuts, but I don't think their stamp of approval means that much.

It's clearly north vs. south (Chris Guy - 11/7/2007 8:14:15 PM)
if you look at the endorsements of Hontz and Forgit respectively.

Forgit can make the argument that it's time for a change after several unsuccessful shots at this seat by Dems from the Fredericksburg area.

Of course Hontz just picked up the endorsement of Albert Pollard, who's very popular in the northern neck. Perhaps that could take votes away from Forgit?

North vs South (Paul Rosbolt - 11/7/2007 8:20:12 PM)
I think that's partially because Hontz announced later than Forgit.  I hoping (as a solid Hontz supporter) that some who made early endorsements are rethinking their positions!

Jost has it (Bill Kuster - 11/7/2007 8:25:27 PM)
I don't know why there is this perception this nomination is competitive.  Jost has the backing of Frederick, Gear and Ligamfelter.  Those politicians span the district with Jost right in the middle.  He has virtually unlimited money to pour in and has been mailing for a while now.

This is not a primary when a widower would stand a chance, these are conventios where endorsements and organizations make all the difference.

Jost has this in the bag - now we need to start spreading the word on what an extremist we are about to see elected to Congress he is from what has traditionally been a more moderate seat among Virginia's delegation.

What I wonder (Chris Guy - 11/7/2007 8:36:48 PM)
is if they don't come off as jerks for snubbing JoAnn's husband.

Jost could really rally our troops, not just locally, but on a national level.

Who will be the R nominee for VA 1st ? (hereinva - 11/7/2007 9:10:28 PM)
Jost ??!! Last time Jost ran for the R- 1st District nomination (2000), he was pounded for being too liberal. There was even a negative ad piece that had a pic of two male college students wearing backpacks holding hands..it read "Jost's vision for VA".... ouch.

I thought Rob Whitt, from the VA 99th was the "shoe-in" for the R spot.

Drake vs Kellam? (mikeporter - 11/7/2007 9:29:36 PM)
I feel fairly confident that Phil Kellam will go up against Drake again next year and should have a pretty good chance to come out victorious.  Kellam 2008

Already out (Vivian J. Paige - 11/7/2007 9:40:14 PM)
Kellam removed himself from consideration a while back.

Not happening (Arlington Mike - 11/7/2007 9:51:17 PM)
I had very high hopes for Kellam last time around.  Somehow, it just never worked - he never seemed ready for the job, never connected with voters, it just never happened.  He's said he's not running this time, so we'll need a new candidate.

My input (legacyofmarshall - 11/7/2007 10:53:07 PM)
I'm in Williamsburg, I know some GOP folk who are going up to Fredricksburg to vote in the convention - they hate Jost (even though he's local) - they support Black.  Tried and true Conservative for them.

As for Chuck Davis - he mixes his wife's social liberalism (she was mainly a military/money Republican) with his own economic liberalism and takes it even further.  This is a man who called for universal healthcare in one of his first statements.  If he wins the nomination and goes on to represent the 1st district, I'd be proud to have him on our side.

Not Dick Black (jackiehva - 11/8/2007 5:07:12 PM)
OMG, this guy you don't need.  It took us YEARS to remove him from the House of Delegates (although he still pulls his puppets' strings in Loudoun).  Talk about a Right Wingnut....  Check his record when he served as our Delegate--a non-performer and that is being kind.

BTW:  His son-in-law, Mick Staton, was just ousted from the LC BoS on Tuesday and good riddance to him too.

Glenn Nye could be a good prospect for beating Thelma Drake (va277 - 11/7/2007 11:36:32 PM)
I've had the opportunity to speak with Glenn Nye in the past and think he could be a great prospect for beating Thelma Drake. He's got the foreign policy experience, experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, experience working in US embassies, and an altogether great background for the second district.

I think it could be a close race, and he could be the one to give her a run for her money and get someone in this seat who represents the district!

I don't know how serious he's thinking about challenging her, but I sure hope he decides to run. It's about time we have someone who knows what they're doing in the second district when it comes to foreign policy, immigration, health care (for children and others), education and national security. We need some fresh perspectives in Washington.

Not so sure (DanG - 11/8/2007 1:52:17 AM)
Thelma Drake is an experienced politician with a solid base.  I'm much more interested in trying to convince Jody Wagner, Tim Kaines Sec. of Finance, to run.  She ran in 2000 against Shrock and barely lost.  She could probably win against the MUCH less popular Drake.

For all non-Second bloggers, let me give you some advice about my home: don't automatically assume military credentials are the key to the Second.  Owen Pickett never served, but was in that seat for decades.  Conversely, David Ashe was badly beaten in 2004 even with his service in Iraq.

Jody Wagner would be a wonderful choice. (spotter - 11/8/2007 6:44:43 AM)
She would be a great candidate, highlighting the difference between her competence and Thelma Drake's incompetence.  She would be a great Congresswoman, too, because of her intelligence and grasp of policies.

Join Jody this Saturday (elevandoski - 11/8/2007 10:12:30 AM)
VBDC
She is our guest speaker at our VBDC breakfast this Saturday, Nov. 11, 9:00 am at Jason's Deli (Pembroke Mall).  $8 which includes breakfast, tax and tip.

oops I meant Nov 10th (elevandoski - 11/8/2007 10:13:28 AM)
What day is it?  I'm still in a fog.

I can't get down there until the summer (DanG - 11/8/2007 12:33:30 PM)
So I'm counting on you, Eileen, to convince her to run. :)

Umm... (elevandoski - 11/8/2007 9:06:43 PM)
I met the woman for the very first time Tuesday night at our Victory Party.  Might be a tad difficult request, Dan, at this point.  :)

What is this solid base you speak of ? (beachydem - 11/8/2007 10:58:22 PM)
LOL....she is a miserable failure representing VA02, as it's obvious she only represents her donors.

The only "Dear Constituent" mail we get from her is addressed *only* to my husband, a GOP donor.  Her "Veterans for Thelma" group are comprised of local GOP staffers and volunteers. And one City Councilman.

The Bushes and Cheney were smuggled into town for high end fundraisers in '04, and she still barely won.

Why should it be so hard to defeat her?

My checkbook is open, who's the challenger :)
