RPV Head to Spend Election Night with French President and Bush!

This is hilarious:

While most Republican and Democratic leaders in Virginia will be sweating the results of tomorrow's crucial election, GOP state party chairman John H. Hager will be partying at the White House with President Bush.

Hager, a former Bush administration official and future father-in-law of the president's daughter, will be a guest at a dinner honoring French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Ha, that's great -- priorities, priorities.  Further evidence that Virginia's Republican Party is completely out of touch.

Not just Hager out of touch (Dennis Coyle - 11/5/2007 8:05:55 PM)
This also clearly shows the White House isn't taking November 6, 2007 seriously for the GOP. Oh, I'm sure they'll have someone updating Hager, but shouldn't the RPV leader be in Richmond to either celebrate (heh) or start damage control?

Or is Hager just dealing with the inevitable and planning to step down sometime soon?

Or it could be wedding planning. (Lowell - 11/5/2007 8:07:40 PM)

Wonder if they'll serve Freedom Fries n/t (GinterParked - 11/5/2007 8:18:41 PM)

It should be funny (legacyofmarshall - 11/5/2007 9:25:48 PM)
Aide: "Mr. Chairman, we just lost the Senate."

Bush: "Whudd-he say, Johnny boy?"

Hager: "No big deal Mr. President, our party just lost control of Virginia's State Senate and next year Mark Warner will destroy us in the Senatorial race.  What's really important is this steak... mmm... tres bien!"

A more important question (Lowell - 11/5/2007 9:34:04 PM)
Est-ce que vous avez du Grey Poupon?

Behold the elite (Teddy - 11/5/2007 9:26:20 PM)
of the Republicans! Personally, I find most of them piggy-plump (personal opinion here, not intended as a personal attack). They really tie into the groceries, don't they? Gives special meaning to "fat cats."

Sorry Teddy (voter4change - 11/5/2007 10:58:15 PM)
Did see that as a personal attack.

Looking for an alibi? (TheGreenMiles - 11/5/2007 9:48:56 PM)
This is like The Godfather when Michael Corleone sets up the killings of the heads of the five families to take place while he's at the baptism, giving Michael an ironclad alibi.  Hager won't even be in the state when tomorrow night's massacre takes place.  But he can't escape blame for this -- the blood will be on his hands ... and President Bush's hands ... and George Allen's hands ...

DPVA: "Republican Leadership to Flee Virginia" (Lowell - 11/6/2007 6:05:24 AM)
Republican Leadership to Flee Virginia on Election Day

Party Leader Chooses Bush Over Virginia

Richmond- As Governors Tim Kaine and Mark Warner and Senator Jim Webb wrap-up their seven-day campaign swing in support of Democratic candidates across Virginia, the Washington Post reports today that Virginia's top Republican leaders, Party Chairman John Hager and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, will both flee Virginia on Election Day

According to the Post, while Virginians go to the polls, Chairman Hager plans to dine with the President of France at the White House.  Lt. Gov. Bolling, meanwhile, plans to be in Delaware.

Questions:

  * 1. Are Hager and Bolling's oddly timed trips a clever attempt to set expectations low?

  * 2. Or are the trips a recognition that Richmond Republicans are a drag on their own Party's ticket, unlike Kaine, Warner and Webb?

Only Hager and Bolling know the answer.

Of course, observers of Virginia politics will know this is not the first time statewide Republicans have abandoned their candidates.  Late last week, the Post also reported that the Republican Party's long-promised GOTV bus tour was no-where to be found.  http://blog.washingt...

He does expect to hold a conference call with reporters after the dinner, and perhaps make an appearance at the Fairfax Republican election night party.

Also missing from the festivites: Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling who will be in Delaware for the National Lieutenant Governor's Association meeting, and checking for results on his Blackberry.
