The Election-Eve View From Fredericksburg

I just got back from a huge rally at the Falls Run Community Center in Fredericksburg. The place was packed to the rafters with enthusiastic Democrats and other voters looking to take out the trash in Richmond next year. Local candidates like Carlos Del Toro, Albert Pollard, and Ted Hontz* were joined by Gov. Warner, Sen. Deeds, Sen. Whipple, Del. Armstrong, and Del. Moran.

There's no doubt at all by those in attendance that if we turn out our voters, we win. Period. For the first time that anyone can remember, running as a Democrat in this generally conservative area of the state is not the liability it once was. And to give you an idea of how things are going on the other side, Richard Stuart had an event recently that was so poorly attended that they stopped calling it a "rally" and just called it a press conference. According to one voter I talked to today, "Richard Stuart couldn't get his dog to play with him if he had a steak tied to his feet."

Below: Sen. Deeds and Stafford Co. Chair Dan Smolen look on as CD-1 candidate US Navy Capt. Ted Hontz (ret.) makes it official.

*Speaking of Capt. Hontz; it's looking more and more like the Democratic nomination for the open CD-1 seat will be a two-person race between Hontz and Phil Forgit, as I've just receive word that Lana Ingram has withdrawn from the race.

Having been to the Falls Run Community Center a number of times, I bet the Democrats that live there filled the room to capacity.  They're a great group!!!

There was a single Republican car (Chris Guy - 11/5/2007 11:25:15 PM)
in the parking lot with the stupidest bumpersticker I've ever seen. It said: 'Republican or Girlie Man?'

Where to even begin? People who don't consider themselves to be a Republican make up more than 2/3 of the population, so you're taking a shot at all of them. And of course if you consider calling men "girls" to be an insult you're puting down all girls, Republican or otherwise.
