Holtzman Vogel Campaign Resorts to Bashing Lesbians, Muslims

Unbelievable. Just when you think Republicans have hit another new low, they do stuff like this.

That's right, the Holtzman Vogel campaign is attacking Karen Schultz for using a consulting firm called NextGen Persuasion, "the new campaign partner of choice for rising stars in the Democratic Party."  Why is Holtzman Vogel attacking Schultz for doing what many candidates do?  Because of this:

We recently guided a 31-year-old Muslim man to victory over an entrenched incumbent -- on the day after the fifth anniversary of September 11th. We steered an openly lesbian 33-year-old to first place in a field of seven.

That's right, the Holtzman Vogel campaign has resorted to a blatant use of anti-Muslim, anti-homosexual prejudice in the waning days of its campaign for Virginia State Senate.  No wonder why Sen. Russ Potts (R) called Holtzman Vogel "to the right of Attila the Hun and way out of the mainstream."  Obviously, Attila...er, Jill Holtzman Vogel knows that she's in serious danger of losing the election. But is that an excuse for a resort to anti-gay, anti-Muslim bigotry?  Disgusting.

P.S. Did the Washington Post know that it was endorsing an anti-gay, anti-Muslim bigot?  They should withdraw that endorsement immediately!

Last few days (Evan M - 11/2/2007 8:15:10 PM)
We're getting down to the last few days, and it's gonna get ugly.

Hold on to your hats.

So, we should be making an issue of Republicans' consulting firms too? (AnonymousIsAWoman - 11/3/2007 12:21:52 PM)
Somehow, I have the old fashioned notion that the fitness of the candidate and where he or she stands on issues should be more important than his or her campaign staff or consultants.

This is a ridiculous ad and a ridiculous criticism of a candidate.  It's "guilt by association."  Consulting firms take on a wide variety of candidates - usually specializing in Democratic or Republican candidates - but their job is to tailor a campaign's image and message and make sure it is consistent and effective.  And both sides use professional consultants.

The relevant question is where the candidate stands on issues not which professional she uses to help her get her message to the public.

The best they can do? (KathyinBlacksburg - 11/3/2007 2:40:38 PM)
If this is the best the other side can do, it is a wonder that there are any voters left who are willing to admit they are Republicans.

Oh I see... (NovaConservative - 11/3/2007 8:12:53 PM)
So "guilt by association" is only ok if Karen Schultz is referring to a client of a FORMER partner of Jill Vogel's husbands, law firm, but not if its about Karen Schultz spending $50k on an image consultant.

Got it.  Nice double standard.

Same me the fake outrage.  Democrats have been as bad, if not WORSE than Republicans this cycle, and Schultz has been the worst offender.  To run an ad calling the Vogel family business "lobbying for illegal immigrants" is ridiculously deceptive and totally outrageous.

Washington Post knew what they were getting (justicat - 11/3/2007 11:06:04 PM)
Or at least should have, had they not been wearing those special Wolf glasses.

Nothing coming from Vogel's camp that is a surprise in any way.
