Update: The Virginia Partisans have responded and issued a challange:

Call to Action

State Senate Candidate George Barker has come under attack in a vicious anti-gay mailer run by his opponent and paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia.  If you want to get your blood boiling, YOU CAN SEE THE MAILER BY CLICKING HERE.

George Barker is one of Virginia Partisans' endorsed candidates and is one of the key races in the effort to retake the state Senate from the Republicans.  VP's PAC has already donated more to Barker's campaign than to any other candidate in our organization's history.  But we need to do more.

We need to make sure that this kind of homophobic attack backfires on candidates like Jay O'Brien who use them -- and that George Barker wins in a landslide!

Here's where you come in.  Please respond to this challenge issued by VP member Terry Mansberger:

"I'm sure you all know about the attached flyer that Jay O'Brien and the state Republicans have sent out in the 39th Senate race.  I am livid that he would try to smear George with these lies and misrepresentations of his positions. The Barker campaign is trying to get a mailing out to address the
overall negative tone of O'Brien's flyers on this and other issues and needs our help to fund the response.  I personally will be delivering a check for $100 to George's HQ tomorrow night and challenge all my fellow Partisans to match that effort. We have got to get rid of this gay-baiting idiot and send our GLBT friend and good Democrat George Barker to Richmond. Thanks!  /s/
Mr. Terry L. Mansberger."

You can help in two ways:

1)  Send a contribution directly to the George Barker's campaign at www.barkerforsenate.com.  A contribution this way, through secure ActBlue online, will get to his campaign in time for him to use it.

2)  Help make phone calls on George Barker's behalf.  Phone banks are established at the Arlington County Democratic Headquarters located at the Courthouse Metro - 2009 14th Street N  Suite 612 Arlington 22201 from now until election day to help our endorsed candidates.  The dates and times
are: Saturday 10/27 from 3:30 to 6:30, Sunday 10/28 from 4 to 9, Saturday 11/3 from 3:30 to 6:30 and Sunday 11/4 from 1 to 8.  This is our one final push to get out the vote by phone banking for not only George Barker but also Steve Heretick, Bruce Roemmelt, Janet Olezek and  Jeanette Rischell.

Please join us in making short get out the vote calls.  Any time you can help is appreciated.  Please contact  Charley Conrad charleyconrad@comcast.net or 757-374-2447 to arrange a time to make calls, or just show up at the times shown above.

Maybe O'Brien is feeling the heat from the Post endorsment of Barker (James Martin - 10/27/2007 12:43:30 PM)
District 39: Republican Sen. James J. "Jay" O'Brien Jr. is an affable incumbent, but his scant command of policy and legislative issues has failed to impress. His Democratic rival, George L. Barker, a health-care planner, would make a far more able, detail-oriented and effective senator in this district straddling the Fairfax-Prince William line.

republican despair (pvogel - 10/27/2007 3:56:26 PM)
This is what they do when it gets bad for them.
Like a rabid dog snarling at you, spreading its disease  through its spit

This Has A Ring of Deja Vu To It (HisRoc - 10/27/2007 4:57:36 PM)
Has anyone ever encountered Jay O'Brien in an airport men's room?  Just wondering...

Homophobia (seamusotoole - 10/27/2007 8:24:04 PM)
Should any of this hatred spewing out of this man's mouth surprise us?  It's very much like his hatred towards immigrants and those who have come from different cultures and countries.  His platform is all about hatred and FEAR.  I sure wish they could come up with some more original themes.  The mailer is ludicrous, untrue, and ridiculous.  This is just more of the same effort to pit people against each other as they did in 2004 with the gays and now in 2007 with the immigration issue. Our public schools are the best among the nation, no thanks to those who have done their best to make this not happen.

Frankly, for someone who doesn't even have the courtesy to arrive on time for a debate given at Robinson High School and struts in in time for one question and a closing statement, his crediblilty is at about zero.  Let's send this guy packing once and for all what do you say?  Let's get someone in the State Senate with a background in every area important to all Virginians and can get some real work done in the legislature.  In answer to his hateful mailer, let's donate and work even harder for the Barker campaign.  It's time for a postive change in Virginia.  Let's move our state forward not blast it back to the Stone Age.  GEORGE BARKER FOR STATE SENATE.  LET'S GET IT DONE. His opponent is in the depths of desperation to stoop to this low level.

O'Brien = Homophobe (brookeln - 10/27/2007 11:47:56 PM)
So... O'Brien doesn't think we should  "promote awareness and appreciation of diversity" to children?!? Does he think we should teach them to be hateful bigots like he is?

Sometimes I wonder what country I am living in... or what planet.

This mailer is the perfect illustration of how much of a hateful individual O'Brien is. And the people who voted him into office should be ashamed.

To my gay GOP friends in Virginia (PM - 10/28/2007 9:12:37 AM)
Please note that O'Brien's flier was sent out under the letterhead of the Republican Party of Virginia.

It is time for you to switch parties.  It was time seven years ago, but better late than never.

Double Standard (lahuard - 10/28/2007 5:25:34 PM)
So what the republicans are saying is that we should teach the 'controversy' regarding evolution and intelligent design, but should not accept different viewpoints regarding marriage. How is this conclusion reached?

How is this conclusion reached? (Lowell - 10/28/2007 5:26:49 PM)
The same way they erroneously conclude that homosexuality is a "lifestyle choice," apparently.

Just to elaborate a bit, how ridiculous is it (Lowell - 10/28/2007 5:30:54 PM)
that these right-wingers really believe some heterosexual wakes up one morning and casually decides, "y'know, I'm really bored, I think I'll change my sexual orientation for a while, just for fun.  Yeah, leave the wife/husband, maybe move to Dupont Circle and buy a cool loft...that will be so much fun!"

That's the implication of "lifestyle choice," that it's:

a) a choice
b) just another "lifestyle," like deciding to join a commune or take a job bashing unions (snark) or whatever

One more point:  if there's no evolution, and an omniscient, omnipotent god created everything, then how could he not have known he was creating homosexuals?  Are the right-wingers saying god made a mistake or something?

Some national blog coverage (PM - 10/28/2007 9:17:01 PM)
