Chap: "My family will not be intimidated"

Read the entire statement by Chap Petersen from his press conference this morning here:

What I do mind is the arrogant mind-set that says "I can get away with this" because I'm in public office or my spouse is a powerful public figure.

It's wrong. Anyone who discloses a family's personal information to gain a political advantage lacks the moral compass to serve in public office. The fact that it's my family makes no difference. You should never do that to any family. I have never discussed the family life of Devolites-Davis in my campaign - she should have returned the same courtesy.

We have eleven days to go. As far as I'm concerned, this matter is closed and we're moving forward. My family will not be intimidated by these tactics. We are Democrats, but we're not pacifists. We don't back down from a fight.

We will run this race to the finish line and when it's over, we will bring new leadership to the 34th State Senate District."

I would certainly hope that this is on all the DC-area evening newscasts today.

OMG It was purposeful? (PM - 10/26/2007 1:48:00 PM)
I had assumed that the JMDD disclosure must have been inadvertent -- clumsy editing or something.  But then I read this from Chap's statement:

My family's personal information - including home phone, home address, and the names of our daughters - was circled in red ink on the attack piece and red arrows were drawn pointing to it.

I have been following politics all my life -- my dad held political meetings in our house.  In 50 years I have never heard anything so disgusting.  I mean, this goes beyond things like the "McCain has an illegitimate child" rumor the Bushies started in SC in 2000.

Is there a scan? (brookeln - 10/26/2007 2:02:28 PM)
Is there a scanned image of this disgusting mailer anywhere? Any response from the JMDD camp?

Nevermind... (brookeln - 10/26/2007 2:04:31 PM)
I found a scan of the image here: http://notlarrysabat...

The Mailing (code - 10/26/2007 2:35:24 PM)
Does anyone have a digital copy of the mailing in question (hopefully with the address blacked out)?

You mean besides NLS? (Lowell - 10/26/2007 2:47:39 PM)

just stupid (JScott - 10/26/2007 4:03:38 PM)
while I think it was just down right stupid for the JMDD foks to do this and this of course is no justification by anymeans but the guys name and number are listed in the phone book. I think he was more outraged at the fact his daughters were referenced. HE is a public figure to be sure but his children should be left alone.
Not sure if it was me in his position how I would have responded but I can tell I would rather have this than expose my children to the people out there who would call me "scum" on a regular basis in the discourse of public debate. If Chap sticks to the issues he will should do fine given Davis's tendancy to fall of the cliff of rationality.

It doesn't matter if the info was public or not. (Pain - 10/26/2007 4:06:39 PM)
It was out of bounds.  Just because my number is listed doesn't mean I want you to send it out to 60,000 addresses.  It doesn't matter if I am running for office or not, that simply is irresponsible.

There is not way to spin this for JMDD (Pain - 10/26/2007 4:08:45 PM)
She screwed up.  Chap 1, JMDD 0.  Her supporters can try to turn this around that Chap is overreacting, but if the roles were reversed she would use it for her gain too.  Tough break.

It's not the posting of public information (True Blue - 10/26/2007 4:45:22 PM)
It's the obvious incitement of harassment.

Yes, anyone could have looked up Mr. Petersen's information and then engaged in harassing behavior without Ms. Devolites-Davis' involvement. But no one apparently did so until after Ms. Devolites-Davis' campaign sent out a flyer that was obviously meant to incite harassment of Mr. Petersen's family. There was a causal connection between the incitement and the harassment.

There is nothing to suggest that the White Pages or any other company or individual has taken action to deliberately provoke the harassment of Mr. Peteren's family.

Attempts to deflect attention from Ms. Devolites-Davis' actions--things she actually did--by citing hypothetical actions by third parties that did not take place won't fly. It is Ms. Devolites-Davis' own actions that condemn her.

Yes, hypothetically any number of people might have incited harassment of Chap Petersen's wife and children. But only Jeannemarie Devolites-Davis ACTUALLY DID incite that kind of harassment, harassment which drove Mrs. Petersen and the Petersen family's small children out of their own home.

This is inexcusable behavior from an elected official.

and so (JScott - 10/26/2007 6:33:57 PM)
and so the hypocrites can crawl back into their holes. Read over at NLS how I guess here only the Republicans are being held accountable themselves as candidates for mail pieces sent out by campigns while we can dismiss the accountablity in other races by Democratic candidates for mailers that have been equally shameful as if they were unaware of the content. Please, negative campaigning works I guess but its shameful nonetheless regardless of who engages in it. When will it ever change?

If you wanna play rough... (Kindler - 10/26/2007 10:04:47 PM)
My favorite line: "I have never discussed the family life of Devolites-Davis in my campaign..."

Ahem!  Subtle warning there?  We all know what would wriggle out if that rock got turned over...
